Default splicing gps antenna (reciever) wire

I would like to cut and then splice my gps antenna wire so Iit will pass thru a smaller hole.
Is this inviting prpblems? Possibly degrading reception?
If ok any recommendations on the best method to splice?.... rcouret

if you are going to cut the wire, then my suggestion would be to cut off the connector and after you've pulled the wire, attach a new connector....rather than inserting a coupler in the middle of the wire.

First choice - Make the hole larger or else:

Buy coaxial conectors(pair m/f) and use them to make the splice. I just installed a new Lowrance and it comes with just a one foot (1')
length of wire from the antenna. You then connect the supplied extender cable from this to the unit.

you lose signal thru any connector...even a straight thru connector. The smart way to do this is to cut the end of the wire and then replace the connector to the radio. Sure there are lots of other ways...but this is both the simplest and safest way to do it.

These GPS units have moulded connectors, where do you find a replacement that can be soldered?

the connector is a standard connector....the one on the antenna just looks nice. Call the manufacturer and ask them what the connector is ... in standard trade terms. They will tell you...

no, what he said is right. the sea talk connectors/cables are molded. I dont believe you will be finding a connector that you can buy.

It would be helpful if someone identified the antenna/gps that we're talking about here. If this is an intelligent antenna, that's quite different than a standard GPS antenna which uses coax connections.

If it's a coaxial connector you could do it. If it's molded I would be really careful! Be sure you are capable of doing it before hand. There are many different types of coaxial cables and the smaller ones can be a bit tidious to terminate. I would recommend talking to the manufacturer prior to doing it or making a bigger hole and using a rubber grommet to cover up the hole and make it where water doesn't just rush in.

The unit is a Lowrance 330c. The GPS antenna/reciever module is the LGC-2000. It has the same wire set up that GeneNJ described.
I have decided to go the way of the majority and drill the larger hole. No need opening a can of worms. Thanks for the input.

If you need a large passthrough, you can get the "Blue Sea" connectors that allow up to a 1.5" hole, that gets covered and sealed both side. Very nice design and you can pass lots of wires through it.

I have a Furuno 1650 and cut and reused the connector, but not before I call Furuno`s service. They told me that the cable should not be any shorter than 15`.They told me how to disassemble the connector without damaging it.How to put it back together and it turned out to be a piece of cake. You might need a tool called a solder sucker,I did.

just so you lowrance guys know. The cable carries the nema signal and power. You can cut it, shorten it, and splice it as you wish. I shortened and spliced my 104's cable to the antenna.

Just as in everything else the quality of your work will be directly measured in it's performance of operation.
