Default Problem with Garmin, Need Advice...

Yesterday, we went offshore. The screen on my older Garmin 215 turned so dark that I could not even read it. I realized that it was in direct sunlight for a little while, but this is winter and the temp. never got over 65. I turned the unit off for about 15 minutes and then the unit seemed to get back to its old self again...meaning, I could read the screen to get back to the getties. What a realization for me to test my skills on using the good 'ole compass and the sun. I did not know how attached I was to the GPS. Any thoughts???? Time to get a new one?? Thanks in advance.

Heath,
Call Garmin and ask them. they have excellent customer Svs. You can download the owners manual off of their web site

http://www.garmin.com/manuals/80_OwnersManual.pdf

If I had to guess I would say you were not getting enough power to the unit. usually they will just shut down if that happens.

I wouldn't repair/replace that unit unless it dies. Just carry a handheld GPS as a back up just in case-you should have a spare all the time anyway

Garmin's reputation for outstanding service tends to take a nosedive when you are talking about out-of-production units. If its a screen problem and it persists you might want to start looking long and hard and newer models.
