Default Raymarine S-1000 Autopilot

I'm considering one for my 23' Grady. I would like to know how well it works at slow trolling speeds. I called Raymarine and was told it works down to 1.5 kts. If anyone is using the S-1000 I would like to know all the good and the bad. Thanks for any input Jim.

I used mine on Lake Erie, trolling slowly for Walleye. It is VERY FUSSY if it gets below 2 mph (1.7 kts) and would often totally lose its mind and require a complete reset.

At cruising speeds, going from point A to B, it was great. I would say if you NEVER get below about 2 kts trolling, you'd also be OK. For my particular application, I wouldn't get another one if it was free.

Well took it for test run , but I am not receiving data from gps . but pump is working and turns boat fine . I was a little worried being that I was at the high end of specs seems like it will be fine once I figure out the proper gps hook up. Anyone who has this set up , please chine in Nav 1944 ,

There is info about this problem on the Raymarine website. It's in the FAQ section under customer support.

I have a 2007 2360 cc sailfish With a single F250. Installed a s1000 two years ago, easy install all parts included in the box. For the price it's a great unit worked as advertised. The unit would troll down to 2mph if conditions were good (wind-waves) But otherwise 3mph was more realistic. I just installed a Garmin GHP10. I wish I had originaly installed this unit. The install was three times more expenceive more involved and took longer but the unit works perfectly. Knowing it's limitations the s1000 was a solid unit. Good luck, check out BOE Marine for prices. Bob

I had the s1000 in my past boat, but I think there are better products for the money. I highly recommend the st6002 s1g....which is available only on a limited basis (clearance) while lots of people paid a clearance price of 1k, I paid 1.1k and am very impressed with its performance.

Larrynimmo, how is the st6002 s1g at speeds below 3mph? Do you have this setup on an outboard?

I don't understand why Ray doesn't program the unit to read the heading data if the unit is connected to a heading sensor or a flux gate compass. Would make it alot more reliable when slow trolling....

Tested unit today , all preset trolling patterns work great ,auto works great , the only thing I am, having trouble with is going to a waypoint or a route, tends to not want to follow my gps track it stays off to starboard 0.2-0.3 nm which in the intracoastal could put you in some skinny waters. Will have to give RM a call.
