Default Garmin GPSmap 492 no longer detecting satellites

My GPS suddenly stopped detecting satellites. The only thing that's possibly changed is that I have recently wired up my VHF to the GPS so the DSC would work, but the GPS worked fine for a few weeks after that.

Also- I live in Charleston SC, and use my boat mostly nearshore and in the rivers/creeks locally. My GPS will stop plotting any landmarks (rivers, channels, the main "detail" of the map) and will only display the cursor on a brown background when I get a certain distance upriver. Is there a way to load more detail of certain areas into the unit?

Any Suggestions?

Thanks

Well, don't think it's the DSC work you did. As you say it worked for a few weeks, and even if wires came disconnected or whatever, shouldn't affect the plotter.

492 came either as internal or external antenna. Which are you using? If external, I'd carefully check all connections to the antenna as the first thing. Seems to me that either they are hosed, or you likely have a defective antenna or plotter. If internal, I know you said not much has changed but could you have added something (probably metal) which could be blocking internal antenna's sky view? (I don't think this is very likely.)

I take it you are seeing NO satellites when you look at the on-screen chart in the config section?

About the map detail. the pre-loaded charts on the 492 are very good, but with a few exceptions they don't go very far up coastal rivers. The 492 will accept data cards which have more detail for a given region. Check with Garmin or on their website for availability for your river/area.

It's an internal antenna style unit. It sits right on top of my console (center console boat), and I don't have a t-top or bimini so there's nothing interfering with the antenna and the sky. There is a metal grab rail nearby, and the antenna for the VHF, but this never seemed to affect it before. Yes- I am seeing NO satellites.

I read something earlier today about other folks with Garmin GPS's having to update their software periodically to acquire satellites. My unit was a display unit at a dealership that closed down, so all I got with the unit was the power/data cable- I didn't get any other wiring (like usb cables) to hook it up to a computer. I'm not even sure if this unit was designed to interface directly with a PC because it has the card slot... am I wrong?

Thanks Key Pine

Default Same issue here...

I have a Garmin 498 that did the same thing this wkd. Mine is an external antenna so I busted my ass replacing the antenna with wires through the T-Top and no change. Let me know what you find out.

I have this same unit. the same thing happened a few weeks ago. You need to contact Garmin for a software update. They will send you a chip and only ask for a deposit. Yopu will get your deposit back once you get return the chip.

jchern

That is helpful as can be, but boy, I"m stumped. Does Garmin admit that the units are just suddenly not getting the satellites and a software update fixes it? I'm wondering what in the heck could make the OLD software suddenly quit recognizing the same old birds. Or, I guess, maybe just quit receiving, period. Did they give you any clue when you were in touch with them?

That's news to me (what you read earlier today) but maybe that is the problem. Seems to be in jchern's case. Be interested to see if Nikodog's turns out the same (I have a 498 like he does, which of course is the same basic unit as the 492. Mine was still working this afternoon, but I do have the latest software for it.)

And about computer interface, your hunch was right. The 492 does not have direct computer hookup ability, all is done through the cards. Sometimes you can get the card with update from a local West Marine or other Garmin dealer, or take your unit in to them and borrow the card. They don't all have all the updates though, and as jchern said, it is free and painless through Garmin, just takes a few days longer.

Do post the answer when you find it.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I would have called yesterday, but it was a holiday, so I was hoping to get a quick fix (looks like it wont be quick...). I will definitely let everyone know what turns out.

Thanks again.

I spoke with Garmin and a software update is the fix but there may be a work around to get you going until the update. See complete response from Garmin below:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I would be happy to help you with this. First, I would try a auto locate
and see if that corrects the issue. If it doesn't I would then try a
software update. I'll provide directions below on how to do both of
these.

Directions on how to do a AutoLocate:

1. Power unit on
2. Hold down the Menu button
3. Highlight the GPS tab
4. Press Menu
5. Highlight AutoLocate
6. Press Enter

After you click on AutoLocate let it set for 20 to 30 minutes with a
clear view of the sky.

Directions on how to do a software update:

If you don't want to purchase the data card or data card reader we can
send you a data card with the update already on it. We would charge you
50 dollars + shipping and handling then once you return the data card we
would credit you back the 50 dollars. If you decide to do this, you'll
need to call us directly at 1-800-800-1020 M-F 800am to 600pm Central
time.

Niko-

That is almost exactly what the Garmin Rep told me (just got off the phone). They are very nice, and also have very enjoyable hold music . The rep tells me that a software update will quicken the satellite locating process, but would not fix it.

I'll try this tonight and see what happens. Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Had the same thing happen to my 498 this weekend. Can't describe how unhappy I am with this unit...

Tried the "Acquire Satellites" command. Let the boat sit stationary for over an hour... no dice. Guess I'll have to call Garmin again.

Funny, I got the chip from garmin with the update today and tried the auto locate(30mins) and initialize (30mins) and had the same luck as you. It's weird that both yours and mine stopped working on the same weekend with the same problem. I am going to run a different antenna and cable tomorrow to see if it makes a difference. Good luck.

Amazing? WHY does a GPS which was working perfectly suddendly require a software fix to acquire satellites?

Nothing has changed with satellites in recent times so just what is Garmin on about?

Several new satellites have been added to the constellation over the past 2 years and the new GPS 2F series are going into orbit this year. This is exactly the reason that older unit software needs upgrading.

Sounds like a good point, but...

Camp- maybe a stupid question, but did you update your unit before you tried the autolocate ?

I brought this up to Garmin when I finally got them on the phone, and the rep tells me that the current map software I have for this area is the best available, so I guess I'm SOL on my unit mapping the upriver portion of a major river and very large lake (there's locks that move small barges from the mouth of the river to the lake). I find that a little ridiculous. I do a lot of night fishing in this area, and if there's no moon, there's no light. Would be nice if I could see where I was on a map.

And my Garmin Color Fish Finder (separate from GPS unit) is starting to lose contrast.

Both units less than a year old.

Marsh, I have a 492 with internal antenna....had a similar issue and did the software update to 3.40 and now it works great.

As far as the charts go, the 492 is pre-loaded with coastal Bluecharts...at some point as you head up river, the charts end and you need the inland lakes and rivers / SE to pick up navigation. Its available as a Bluechart...snaps right into the unit, and you will be all set.

I paid less than $100 for mine...search eBay...they are available. If you can't find one, check with Jim at BOE Marine.

Thanks Parthery

Did you have to go through Garmin to get the update?

Is this the update card you were referring to? :

Funny... I asked Garmin a few times if there was anything I could do about this, and they kept telling me that there wasn't anything available for my unit... ??

I bought the Marine Data Management kit when Boat US closed up their stores...a couple of years ago. It came with the card reader, a blank Bluechart, and the software. With it, I was able to download the update and install it on the blank Bluechart. Pop it in the machine, power it up, and in 2 minutes it installed the update.

That is the one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Garmin-Inland-La...d=p3286.c0.m14
