GPS Antenna Cable quote:Originally posted by TB Hawks:
Before I call or go to a electronics shop and make a fool out of myself, let me ask you guys as we are family and you won't make fun of me (HA!HA!HA!).....I have a new GPS (chartplotter) I am about to install and the antenna lead cable is only about 14 inches long with a connector for the (25 ft) cable, my problem is I only need about 3 ft and I would be at the plug in in back of the unit. Can you splice the cable and make it the length you need, instead of rolling it up under the console and tying it off. I know a dumb question....Thanks guys (guys being generic for people).

On the newer Garmin units, the antennae are NMEA devices and the antenna “cable" is simply a data cable. Cutting it shorter does not hurt it at all. If anything it makes the signal stronger. This is straight from Garmin as I called them recently. It seemed intuitive that cutting it is OK, but that 2010 costs some dough, and I was not going to gut that rascal's cable without hearing it from THE MAN.
Don’t know what brand you have, but your answer is a phone call away.
