Default NMEA 0183 VHF to GPS

I'm hoping someone can help...I have an Icom M504 VHF and Raymarine A70D GPS/FF that I want to connect for DSC.

The A70D has two NMEA 0183 ports in the form of individual wires for the positive and negative in/out. I'm assuming that for these two to talk, I should need 1 of these port which means four wires: +IN, -IN, +OUT, and -OUT. Simple enough?

Then we get to the VHF. The Icom has one NMEA port, but in this case, there are only two wires: +/- IN and +/- OUT. These are coaxial cables.

I'm assuming the +OUT on the VHF connects to the +IN on the GPS, the +IN on the VHF connects to the +OUT on the GPS, etc. etc...

The question is, how do i make the proper connection from an individual wire on the GPS to the coaxial on the VHF?

Any help is appreciated!

Just figured this out and posted it in another thread.

Go yellow to red and white to white.

Yellow= raymaine yellow red = icom red

whites are whites.

Take the bare shields from the icom leads and connect them both to the boat ground somewhere.

The A70 has to be receiving gps info and have a lock for minute or so before it will transmit to the radio.

Tom,

Is it correct to connect the GPS out to the VHF out as you described? I would have thought that you connect the out on the GPS to the in on the VHF and vice-versa as edyer instructed.

Edyer,

So the NMEA negative wires are just like neg power wires that go to the negative batt terminal? They don't have to connect to each other? Do I do the same for the A70D negs? Can they just tie into the VHF ground and the GPS ground?

The other question I have relates to the actual wiring: Is there a clean way to wire this short of peeling back the coax and twisting/taping the shields to a wire that I run to a neg ground?

Thanks for the quick response...

Leave the A70 - wires alone. They don't need to be connected. you can connect the two negatives from the radio together and then go to the battry -
