I just joined the site and am in the process of rigging a new boat. I like the Garmin equipment (have played with the Raymarine and Garmin gear thus far) and want to get the best bang for my buck.
Currently I am planning on a complete system, chartplotter, radar etc. Any advice on the Garmin network? I hear they are very good chartplotters (which seems to be agreed by most) but I have heard mixed reviews on radar, autopilot, sounders etc.
I am flexible with price / value, therefore reconditioned gear or combo packages would be appealing. I priced out a 4212, complete network system, 18HD radar, autopilot etc before I run out and drop that kind of coin, would love to hear form anyone who has tried the gear out.
you could go 100 diff ways but this would be a nice setup, IMO:
1. Garmin 4210 with weather box - for all your chartplotting needs
2. Raymarine new C90 or 120Wide with a Ray 300 sounder box and your choice of thru hull ducer - the b260 is the mack daddy here - this would do all your radar and FF needs with chartplotter redundant back up - no gps antenna needed
3. The new - just released Ray 4 KW Digital dome on a 5 inch seaview strut
4 Icom 504 with 8 foot digital antenna
5.Clarion cmd5 or fusion with 4 JL coaxials with JL 4 ch amp
6. Garmin or Ray X-10 AP - they are both excellent
The reason you mix and match is Garmin radar and sounder is not = to Ray's offerings and Garmon has the better plotter and weather....

What would a fair price be for the quality installation? Is the autopilot the most expensive portion?
Installs are all over the place - it depends on the quality of the install and the technical prowess of the person doing it. There are many parts that you don't think about - like running wire up and down pipes, under floors and can take a bit of time that takes two people - and you are paying both. For what I wrote above, anywhere from 2500-4000 is fair. Also will we have to add batts? More on our installs here - see the Intrepid and Garmion install and the reasons why article...don't cut the install short - get it done right...corners that are cut can lead to disasters on the water...
Just did the same to a new 24fs I bought a few months ago. I had Garmin on the old boat but opted for Furuno this time. No problems with Garmin but I wanted the 3D system. Radar, fish finder, plotter all Furuno exept an Icom vhf and a Clarion for music. Also added sirius and can display it on the display. Like mine so far.
Your boat looks AWESOME. Makes me excited. Mine won't be delivered until late May.
Do you mind send me your complete equipment list? This is the first boat I have ever rigged and need all the help I can get! Any specifics from your work orders would be most appreciated. I have been working for hours putting together packages from the net, but I dont know if they are complete. For example, I have no idea what speaker sizes would even work on the 24FS.
Did you use the Garmin radar and sounder on your last boat? I do like the chartplotter on the Garmin but i have heard from a number of folks that the radar and sounder are not the best.
Thanks--we have really enjoyed the boat thus far. I'll get some information and relevant pics to you later today. I haven't yet put a pilot in because I wanted time to research it some more. Plan is to fish this year and then take it back in next winter to get some extra rod holders installed and put the pilot in. The main reason I didn't get the pilot right away is that I wanted time to look a little harder at the Garmin unit. It seems to have some desirable features that the Simrad's don't but I still have lots to learn before I decide.
FYI, I talked with the fellow I bought my boat from last week and he said they just got an incredible deal on a new 24 (either from the folks at Regulator or another dealer) that would be passed on to the buyer. All I remember was that it had twin 150's.
1. Furuno Navnet 3D (12 inch) Multi-function Display 2. Furuno 12kw Radar (open array); DRS12A 3. Furuno DFF1 Sounder Module 4. BBWX1 Sirius weather for Navnet unit 5. Airmar B260 Through Hull Transducer 6. Icom M504 vhf 7. Clarion am/fm/cd 8. 4, 7 inch Clarion speakers 9. Install extra reading lights on underside of electronics box 10. Install electric plugs under aft gunwales for downriggers 11. Install through hull temperature sensor (B260 doesn't do temps)
The speakers are in the lower aft corners of the console and on the aft end of the forward fish boxes. The dealer also built a starboard mount for the extra electronics stuff that goes inside the console because there wasn't enough room down there to accomodate everything I wanted to add. He also put a switch box on it to make it easier to turn off power, access fuses, etc. I've attached a picture of this; the view would be to the left as you open the door to the head.
The dealer emailed me photos during the process, before holes were drilled or cut so we could make sure everything was placed where it made sense to me before they did aything; I live in North Dakota and the work was being done in North Carolina. I have other photos if there are other things you would like to see.
very nice ...the only change I would make is the clarion speakers - they are not the best and don't last long...do a search here...if you don't want to spring for the JL's - get the infinity's - same price as the clarions but last a lot longer
Chip euliss........Nice boat...lets see the dash board!!!
Glen E.........nice web site. I really like the installation gallery page!!

Here you go. This was taken in the shop but I think you can see where everything is. The MFD is centered left so the pilot can go to the right; I will add a depth gauge there too to balance it out and give me a little more flexibility for display in the main screen.
Thanks, I'll check into that--sounds like a heck of a deal! I was thinking that I couldn't do that with Yahamas, only with Mercury's. The only fault I find with the Yahama gauges is that they are hard for me to read at a glance.

You have a great website, I wish I was not in Ohio! Would love to have your expertise on the install, looks like you do great work. Thanks for the package setup suggestion. I was planning on going all Garmin, I will give the Raymarine gear a hard look. Any reason Furuno and others did not make your list? So many options!
it all depends on your expertise and your usage...Furuno is top notch stuff - probably the best and most professional but takes some getting used to...I would have no problem recommending any Furuno product as it has great factory support and is stone reliable stuff. I don't boat or fish on a "serious" basis so Garmin is good enuf for me. Hell, I even have transom mount/in hull 600W ducers!
You cannot go wrong with any Garmin, Furuno or Raymarine priduct...but honestly, I would not touch any one else now...
and if you ever have the chance - watch navNet3D on their $10K back box unit with a 15" KEP display - nothing else on the water even comes close....
I would NOT recommend a Garmin plotter, and a Raymarine/Furuno Radar. This will not allow you to use Radar overlay (overlaying radar image ontop of chart).

the ray radar recc'd above overlays the ray chartplotter (c120W)..
