I think CANet can only be used with other Garmin units, if that is what you are trying to do. It will network several Garmin plotters, a Garmin remote sounder, etc together. As far as I know it is not for networking units from other manufacturers together with Garmin units. For that, you are back to NMEA.
So if you want to use one transducer and one Garmin sounder to drive two or three Garmin fishfinders, etc., that you can do. You are right BTW that Garmin's site is pretty short on tech info on CANet.
Do you have a schematic like that showing two head units tied togeter? A finder and a GPS.
By chance?
No sir, the one I posted is the only one I have. However, I think you can use the same principle to connect additional units accordant to canet capacity.
Regards,

Hi - I'm stymied too, about CANet. I have a 5212 plotter, AIS 600 and Garmin 200 VHF tied together with NMEA 2000 Backbone, they call it (snap-in T's, drop cabless, terminators) Is this the same as CANet? I'd like to connect a 2nd sounder, a GSD-22, into this network. It has a "power/data" port, an ethernet port and a sounder port. I assume the "data" wires are left unconnected if I'm going to use an ethernet cat 5 cable. True? Tanks!!

N2K Network is NOT the same thing as CANet connectivity. The 4000/5000 series does not support CANet. What sounder do you already have connected in your network?
Hi Tom - Thanks for the response. Only things networked right now are: (all Garmin) the 5212, AIS 600 and the 200 VHF. I removed an older Furuno Color Sounder Fishfinder FCV-292 which I think had two transducers (which are expertly hidden! Not going to replace that old CRT device.) I now have only (1) one source of depth information, an Autohelm Tridata, so I would like to install this GSD-22 remote sounder as a second depth source. I got it for free with the 5212, and it only has the "power/data" cable and nothing else, no transducer or cable, no Cat 5 cable, no manual. Will have to pick some minds at the Miami Boatshow this weekend about transducers, but I'm thinking the Furuno transducer(s) are a lost cause, so once I get a transducer and drill the hole (Ugh!) it'd be a matter of connecting a Cat 5, the power leads and the transducer cable. This sound like a true course?

Capt. You'll need to connect the power cable to a power source once you do that buy a cat 5 cable so you can connect the 22 to your 5212. You're going to have to buy a new transducer for the 22. Here's a link to the GDS 22 users manual/install data.
Thanks again, Tom. Absolutely DREAD the thought of stringing another cable from engine room to bridge! What a hassle on this boat!! (60' Viking CSY) The rest of the install, wiring etc is kinda fun, seeing it all come together.
Thanx.

One other thing; looking at a transducer wiring diagram, it looks pretty simple. Three wires. I am considering cutting the cable on the new ducer several feet away from the top of the ducer, and splicing into wires of the old Furuno fishfinder ducer cable that is still in place, thereby relieving me the laborious task of stringing new cable from bridge to engine room, a very involved process on this boat. (Obviously have to run continuity checks on the top end) Anyone have a negative vote on this idea?
Thanks.
