Replacement for Garmin 172C GPS - The Hull Truth

is the garmin 440 or the 530 a good replacement? I liked the 172C, wish it hadn't broke. checked the cable, it's the unit thats shot i guess.

If there was a weak point with the 172C it was the screen; it was difficult to read in daylight and impossible in direct sunlight. And its the screen that sets the 545 head and shoulders above the crowd. Even the 400 and 500 series units with the lower resolution are a great improvement over the 172. Add the options of a complete set of very good charts, and/or XM weather (the antennas cost a great deal less than the black box you had to buy for the big screen units) and you've got what you need! What is your favorite boating area?

Hey thanks. I just ordered Garmin GPSMAP 540. I fish upper Chesapeake, OC, MD bays for flounder. Might try Sandy Hook Nj this year. My boats small, 16' Lund. I need a bigger boat but this friggin economy scares me.
