Default Vx2 or 3d

Looking at a Furuno system that will be on a large center console--Considering twin 8" 3ds but not sure they are significantly better than twin 10" Vx2's. I am not using video, etc. Mostly radar/overlay, plotter, sounder--I think i may prefer 10" screens over 8' screens and would be willing to give the auto redraw on the 3d for the bigger screen on the Vx2 ?

Is digital radar that much better than the standard ?

Thoughts ?

VX2 unless you want to pay for alot of potential that may or may not happen. All I hear is how good the 3D will be...but I am using it today. If 3D actually does live up to its promise, I will buy it then but I bought VX2 because it actually works as advertised.

I have the 3D. Yes the charts suck compared to Garmin and Navionics. But the FF and radar are outstanding and more then make up for the shortcomings of the charts.

Unless you are getting a killer deal on the outdated technology (VX2), go with the Navnet 3D. Down the road when the Navionics charts are released for it, you will be kicking yourself for not making the right choice.

Really the only issue is the charts and they will be corrected. For now, the current charts are tolerable.

it really depends on where u live to say yay or nay on the 3d charts. I luv my NN3d. If you are in South FLorida the charts are just fine.

They have an 8" screen? I just bought they 7" vx2 package, and let me tell you how pissed I am, I have 2- 10.4" screen's never thought that 7" would be less than half the size it's more like 1/3 the size ridiculous for close to 3 grand. Although I do love the 10.4" setup thats why I was actually buying me 3rd vx2 system.

Tough call- All the Furuno stuff is really good.

How much of a power user are you?

You my buy a 3D capable plotter and never use but only use 2D.

If you are the kind of guy that doesn't push it and don't really want to play experiment and learn the capabilities then stick with the traditional stuff- its proven cheap and easy to use, but you are limited to how far you can go in the future and overall.

If you cant deal with software updates and a possible bad rev of code stay away from NN3D. You can certainly tell there is a PC under there somewhere and its itching to give you issues.

If you have the cash and like to play- its really cool,

My list of gripes is real,

Charts are ok, but not great- certainly workable-
Ui- blows - it's not intuitive. especially compared to garmin
Overlay setup is arcane even with the right parts.
I lost the sounder on my last trip and have to find out why - "LOST CONNECTION"
It requires a lot of fiddling to custom make what you want screen wise and what you want is almost guaranteed not to be preset from the factory.

- but I feel overall the unit delivers-

radar is world class
sounder looks great is noise free and bottom tracks perfectly (when it works)
The plotter speed is amazing
Overlay is simply magic
3D is interesting, but Ill be honest and say when I was caught in the fog I immediately reverted to 2D - plotter on left and 2 radar ranges on the right. So Im curious to see how I really take to it over time- if at all.
(AIS receiver is on order)

All these guys who don't own NN3D that are somehow seemingly experts on what it does and doesn't deliver on -crack me up.

If I had to do it all over again Id buy NN3D again.

Dave.....i had a similar problem with the sounder. I had my gain too high on the sounder, so i lowered it to about 40 and it picks up again instead of losing the bottom and "searching" over and over again. Also you might need to tell the mfd to find the sounder again...you can either go to master reset(dont do it unless you have everything backed up) or go to your mynavnet screen and try to select your DFF sounder again.

Thanks- I'll play with it and see if I can get it to light back up, I never bother to change the factory setting which I believe was full auto.

This makes sense because the ducer is glassed into the hull and physically could not move or disconnect, and I "lost connection" in completely calm seas going about 45MPH, so nothing "knocked it out" Sounds like if the systems doesn't see a picture for X length of time it considers the feature connection lost.

The pict shows where we dug out the balsa core when constructing the boat to mount the ducer.

Does anyone know if Furuno plans on releasing a 10" screen in the new NN3D?
