I am looking at purchasing a Magellen Meridian Marine. There are so many different units out there. Any opinions on this unit or others would be appreciated.
I prefer Garmin for a lot of reason. Have you checked the 'search THT' above. A lot has been said on this topic. www.Garmin.comwww.GPSdiscounts.co to buy.

This is just my opnion, nothing more, but over time I've owned 4 different GPS units by Magellan and more than that (half a dozen maybe?) different units by Garmin. I have never had a Magellan that I really liked and I've never had a Garmin that I didn't really like. Its not that there was ever anything wrong with the Magellans (except for one that would sometimes take up to a half hour to lock on), its just that I didn't care for them. Currently I have two Garmin's, a GPSMap-76 (hand held) and a GPSMap-2006 (fixed mount chart plotter). For my needs I have not seen anything else out there that would better suit my needs. So my recommendation would be the same as you've already seen, and that would be to give the various models by Garmin a look. They have a very nice comparison feature at the Garmin site that lets you see, side by side, the featrues of the machines. I'd do that with the specifications from the Magellan at hand if I were you. If there are specifications which you don't understand just ask here, there are lots of folks who will be more than happy to tell you what any of them means.

I considered the Magellan Meridian Marine handheld backup unit for a while, also. When I decided to go with a Garmin primary unit, however, it made much more sense for both units to be Garmins with the same proprietary Bluechart cartography.
Everybody has their own preferences but I have an older Magellan Tracker that I've had for years. Great unit, easy to understand, has never failed to lock on quickly. Also lasts a long time on 4 AA batteries.
I bought a Standard GPS a couple of years ago as a back up but I like the Magellan so much I never use the Standard even though it is a permanent unit.
