I am going to attempt to update the software for my E120. (this should be fun). It says to use Sandisk brand. Do I need to format this card first or just format other brands. This kind of stuff drives me crazy which is why it has never been done!
If memory serves, you have to format the card through your computer to FAT16. The card you have is probably set at FAT32. I did the upgrade last fall and I remember having to reformat the card.
PS - I got the information on how to reformat the card from Raymarine's website.
Your CF card will make contact with your E120 through CF interface. That interface is standardized. Nothing outside of the card knows what kind of CF card is on the other side of that interface (single layer memory, multi-layer memory, Sandisk, Samsumg, whatever).
Take the CF card out of your camera, format it, use it for your update, return it to your camera and reformat it for the camera.
I have a canon camera that uses CF cards. I have 2,4,8, and 16 GB cards.
I was only able to get the 2 gb to work and only when I formatted it, fat 16.
For some reason my E120 did not recognize the larger Sandisk Extreme III cards.
I did not spend much time trying to figure it out, I just keep the 2 GB card around for updates now.
I was only able to get the 2 gb to work and only when I formatted it, fat 16.
Devices sometimes crap out with anything over 2gb CF due to FAT16 limits. Easy to make the device "modern" with a firmware fix...if only the manfr would.
SD flash has two interface standards; one for SD 2gb and under, one for SD-HD for over 2gb. Modern devices can used either, older stuff can't address SDHD. The problem is frequently encounter by folks with old compact cameras trying to use a new 4gb or 8gb SDHC card to hold more pix. Again, updating the device (camera) to used SD-HD is as simple as a firmware fix.
Upgrading the software is really easy. First go to the site and be sure to format the card as mentioned. Then download the upgrade software to the desktop and drag it onto the cf card in the card reader. Then start your unit up with no card and transfer the waypoints to the CF card that you just placed the uprade program on. To do this, push the data button and follow the prompts. Then, turn the unit off and put your card in, then boot the E series. Follow the prompts and it will be upgraded automatically. Final step is to pull the card and reboot while holding down the far left softkey. It will do a countdown to do a factory reset and after it does, release that softkey and you are done. The reset will lose all of the settings and waypoints, hence the reason to save your waypoints on the card. With the unit running. put the card in and hit the data key and follow the prompts to replace your waypoints and route. It really is simple.

For some reason I was having trouble upgrading my C-80. I used the same card as I used for the last few updates. I could not get it to work, so I called Raymarine tech support and they sent me the upgrade next day and I called for a return authorization to send it back. You have to purchase the card for $40 and they will take it back no questions asked, they even paid the shipping.
I used to go nuts trying to download the upgrades, transfer them to the card and then upload it to the machine. My problem is that i was not unzipping the upgrade after downloading it. A tech talked me through it and I never had a problem again. download to desktop, un zip, drag to cf card. verify it is on the card properly (properties - make sure it shows 2 files - one is the "auto boo" take out car and plug it into the machine. By the way, most of the time I used an 8 MB card from my old camera, but I have also used larger, and I have never had to worry about formatting in any system. I would just put the card in the PC slot and hit format - then quick format and I was fine
After unzipping you should see at least 2 files (some later upgrade had more. Here is a screen print of the way mine looked after I unzipped the downloaded upgraded. I then moved both of these files onto the CF card. This was for 3.31 but every one that I did had the autorun file and at least one other after unzipping. this lesson was learned after I though I had downloaded and loaded it to the card, went to the boat and went bananas wondering why it would not work. I never had another problem
i had a problem on older C's and E's that would not read a sandisk ultra II (formated fat16). i don't know if the newly manufactured units will read current cards.
Just downloaded 4.29 from Ray site onto 2GB sandisk CF card. When I look at card it shows 4 files, Autorun dob, E series 429, Digif app code and SR100 Pkg. Does that sound right? Also if Using 2 E80's networked do I need to load new software onto each unit?
Yes, you'll need to do both units. One won't update the other. When I did the update I only saw two files that need to be copied to the CF card. I don't know what the other two you are seeing are for save the SR100. I have an SR100 as well but I didn't see a file labelled as such.

that sounds correct. as noted you do have to update both, however, you can do it from one unit (if you want). make sure both are on and when you get to the update screen you will have a choice. it will say something like "update this unit" and "update remote unit" (doing this from memory). do one then the other.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been so lucky. I have purchased the wrong card, I know that. Lexar instead of Sandisk.
I formatted the card with many things and in many different ways including partitioning it with Norton Partition Editor but no luck
I sent an email to Raymarine and I got the usual Check the cables, reboot your computer and that crab but not any real technical explanation
The CF_Check downloaded from Raymarine is a joke, it always says that the card is fine regardless of the partition that it has, I partitioned the card with an HP tool and even without partition, the CF_Check still saying that the card is fine and compatible.
The only difference that I have found is the number of cylinders between the two cards, the Navionics card has 62 cylinders and the lexar 243 but I assuming that that’s because the Lexar is 2 GB and the Navionics only 512.
I successfully performed the update by using the Navionics card and then almost get a heart attack when I were unable to see the map details but later I discovered that if the decluter is on, the map details get hidden until you shut off the decluter. I don’t know if that bug was from prior to the update.
For now, I have a Lexar CF card in here just to play with it. I remember an old tool from the DOS age called Disk Editor cuz I want to keep digging into that so I want to take a close look of the Navionics card and see why the Lexar doesn’t even being recognized by the GPS.
I dont think i saw this in the strong, and I just did the 4.29 upgrade this past weekend. When you go on the Raymarine websote under "Software Upgrades" you will find in the list a utility program that you can down load that will check the card for formatting and also format it properly. Once that is done, make sure you download and unzip the upgrade files to your hard drive and then drag them to the CF card. make sure they are NOT in a folder of any kind and not buried in some directory on your card. Also, as an fyi, dont forget to backup your waypoints, because you will lose them when you do this upgrade if not. You can save your waypoints on the same CF card. Good luck.

Also, the other files are for upgrading the SR100. When the update crenn comes on, there will be a selection along the softkeys: One will say Update Remote Unit. If you press that, you will see an option to upgrade the SR100 as one of the softkey options. It is important to that you leave your SR100 on for at least 20 minutes after the upgrade or things can get problematic.
