Default NMEA interface Garmin/ Furuno? Try again.

OK you silver tongued devils of the neutron, lets see if you can salvage my sanity. Obviously I haven't got the wiring right. I started to use the blue Pin 3 and ground Pin 2 from the Garmin to feed the DSC for the Icom radio and also to the Pin 3 & Pin 6 of the Furuno 1623. To say that Furunos' manual is lacking is an understatement. Should I have used Com 2 from the Garmin to send data instead of Com 1. I didn't even try the radar to the fisfinder. I just may get more flares and some that are shoulder fired instead. Boy, and I remember when I only had paddles as a backup for the wooden skiff and a paint can full of concrete with an eyebolt for an anchor.

I'd appreciate any help OH WONDERFUL WIZARDS OF THE ELECTRONS...pleez.

Here's what I've got. I'll be darned if I know what Furuno's legend is. Iknow R is receive and T is Transmit but it ends there.

Thanks

You can use either port 1 or port 2, but I believe Port 1 is used by the PC cable, where the protocol setting needs to remain on "Garmin." If you want to use port 1 for NMEA, you have to set Port 1 to that protocol. However, if you use Port 2 for NMEA, you can leave the settings alone when you hook up to a PC, Port 1 on Garmin, Port 2 on NMEA. Here's how I'd do it:

GPS talks to Radio
Pin 6 Green to DSC plug center
Pin 2 Black to DSC plug outer

GPS talks to Radar
Pin 6 Green to P3 Yellow
Pin 2 Black to P4 Green

Fishfinder talks to GPS
Pin 1 White to Pin 5 White
Pin 2 Blue to Pin 2 Black

Radar talks to Fishfinder
Pin 1 White to P3 Yellow
Pin 2 Blue to P4 Green

Garmin setup for NMEA on COM2 and left on Garmin on COM1 for use with the PC cable

1623 and 6100 setup for NMEA Transmit on COM1

Moe,
Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a shot ASAP. So as I see it the letter "C" stand for common. I'll just have to decide which one I don't want the gps to talk to because the GPS can only talk to three devices. I really appreciate your help. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Moe, don't see the purpose of connecting the Radar to the Fishfinder?

The only sentence the 1623 outputs is TLL and I don't believe the 6100 supports TLL as an input so I would be connecting the GPS to the Fishfinder (for both input & output).

Cheers, Kerry.

You're right, Kerry. I was thinking the FF would pass-through the TLL to the Garmin, but it doesn't look like the Garmin would use it anyway.

Here's a color graphic diagram of my set-up, even though your Icom radio may have different colored wires I still hope this helps. I also have Furuno radar but could see no advantage to hooking it up to the NMEA connections since I had the Furuno 1610CF now as my backup GPS but still using it for my fishfinder. Connecting the fishfinder via NMEA will allow speed, temp, and depth to be displayed on the Garmin

Couple Garmin Specific Notes:
Garmin uses common ground for it's NMEA ground, while other manufacturers use specific NMEA ground wires. So what you have to do is connect all the NMEA grounds before connecting to common ground otherwise it will cause "Ground Noise Interference" and interupt the NMEA communications.

Thanks, Fishing-Rod

D stand for data...
Good stuff, I'll need this thread when I get my plug for my Icom 602, and my Lowrance. I messed up the plug that vcame with my radio, and Icom has the part on back order.

Default RE: NMEA interface Garmin/ Furuno! SUCCESS!

Once again you guys come through.

Moe thanks for you info. After swapping some wires and connecting some new ones my data is being exchanged between devices. Thanks to all for diagrams and other input.

Carlos
