It has been awhile since I have posted pictures of my work. This is an install that I did in 5 days down in Anna Maria, FL. It has a couple 12" Navnets, the new DFF3 sounder, 12kw radar, a Simrad pilot, Clarion CMD5 with 6 channel JL amp, KVH M3 with a Dish Network receiver, and a couple Ocean LED underwater lights. I think it turned out pretty good for a 5 day job. (they were pretty long days )

Nice "art" work Duct!!! Wanna install a GHP10 on my Rampage??
Question/Puzzle for you:
I have the Clarion CMD4 right now. Need to loose it for MP3 and DVD functionality. Would LOVE to pick up a cheap $100 CMD5 right now (they are all discounted becuase of the newer versions out), and jsut plug and play the CMD5 in it's place (no need to change or re-run any wires, especially including the wired remote at helm (that would be a biatch!). So that would give me easy and cheap MP3 functionality. BUT, now what do I do for DVD for an LCD TV in cabin and Garmin display at helm? I could get a LCD combo unit (LCD TV and DVD player in it), BUT, those have no video output allowing me to run the output up to the helm (Garmin display).
If I upgrade to the new Clearion DVD unit (CMDV or whatever it is?), I would have to change the wired remote on helm, re-run the remote wire, re-wire the head unit (no biggie), pay the high price for the new head unit...
So what's a Bird to do?? Solve the puzzle dude!! And get yoru arse up to Patchogue, LI to install a GHP!!
Re: 45' Viking Convertible Navnet 3d install photos
the ghp10 is similar to a TR1 right? i've only done 1 TR1 pilot install and that was over a year ago.
as far as the DVD players go... I would install a stand alone 12 volt dvd player in the cabin and split the signal using an audio/video distribution amp. one feed to the helm, and the other to the television. the stand alone 12 volt dvd players run less than 200 dollars, and the distribution amp is about 100 dollars.
Re: 45' Viking Convertible Navnet 3d install photos
The GHP10 IS, the TR1, just "improved" a bit, with a new display designed by Garmin.
So, come on up and install my GHP10. I will not charge you for the learning experience, consider it a gestrue of good will from me to you, to allow you to hone your skills on installing the all new Garmin GHP10 unit. You will then be able to advertise your special abilites as an avid GHP10 installer. And I will vouch for you!!
What date would you like to start on? Give me a few days lead time, cause I haven't bought the unit yet. But I'm sure Jim at BOE can get me one in a few days.

thanks guys
thataway: i think you are confusing the garbage disposal under the galley sink for a central vac. they usually mount the central vac system in the steps leading down to the companionway.
Re: 45' Viking Convertible Navnet 3d install photos
yup, i think that is the garbage disposal and not a vac. gotta say they look similar and it's tuff to differentiate without a size reference.
nice to see quality work. i must say i did thoroughly examine the cable ties and was impressed to see that the simple (and rookie) error of over tightening the ties was not done once. for those who like tight ties, this is not the place to do it cause it will create a hot spot in the cable. nice to see the use of good cable ways too--didn't scrimp on anything that i could see.
did the owner ask for a quote first or just say go at it with an open/blank cheque attitude?
if you did have to first do a quote, i'd imagine it would require some time to do and must be done on board, do you charge for it regardless if the quote gets commissioned?
RE: 45' Viking Convertible Navnet 3d install photos
Nice looking rig job. Any reason you did not go Furuno on the Autopilot. Those MFD 12 are very nice. Looks like you may have connected to TV also? If so how long was the cable run? I am considering doing that but the run from my MFD's to the TV would be a pain to do at this point. I really like that boat. Can't tell which layout it has. I think the last few 45's had the new 46 layout.

Thanks, I know what you mean about people wrenching down on zipties. That is a big pet peeve of mine.
We always work off of a customer signed quote before we start any work on a boat. The installation took me about 5 days, but the planning that went into the job was going on weeks in advance up in New Jersey. The package on this boat is a pretty typical package for us so I had a really good idea how I was going to do it before I left for Florida. Being that we are a Viking subsidiary, we have done hundreds of jobs similar to this one, so it makes it simpler when generating a quote/drawing for the customer. We have alot of quality support people behind the scences in our company to help me pull off a job like this so quickly.
Typically, the only time that we do a job on a time/materials basis, is when we are doing some kind of custom fabrication job, or when dealing with customer supplied equipment that we have no experience with.

Sweet.
We typically install the Simrad or the Furuno, I guess it came down to what the customer preferred. I like both pilots, but I must say that the interfacing with the NN3d is easier done with the Simrad pilot. All you need to do is tie the NN3d Nmea2000 port into the Simnet network and turn on a couple sentences in the NN3d setup. With a furuno pilot, i would have had to run another wire down the the compass and tie into the Nmea connection, then program the compass for 100ms output interval.
On this job we did not wire the MFD12 into the salon tv. The output on the MFD12 is a DVI-D connector, and you would think this can be easily adapter to HDMI, but that is not the case with most televisions. You end up needing an expensive adapter to convert to VGA in order to make it work. The MFDBB (blackbox) units have a DVI-I connector, which is easily adapter to VGA with a simple 10 dollar adapter at the end of the VGA cable. If it were a blackbox unit on this boat, i'm sure we would have tied it into the salon tv.
I meant to take more pictures of the boat, but it was all covered in protective material in the salon. It does have the new small island in the center like the 46'.
