Chris @kvh, Just curious, why will the broadcasting from 97w and 105w (I assume some new ka birds?) affect reception on the 18" dishes? Overpowering them or something? Too much noise? ??
My M1 works REALLY well. Watched the Jets AND Giants get their arses kicked yesterday while trolling down the beach in 3' or 4' long rollers. I don't know exactly how any of these work really, but I'll say this, it's actually pretty damn amazing to me you guys can lock on a satellite on a boat that is moving in just about every direction, rocking around in the swell and chop on a little boat like mine (30') and receive and decode digital video broadcasts from 20,000 miles away!
I have a question/suggestion for ALL: All my TV's at home have DVR's. As you know, once you use a DVR, it's HARD to watch TV without one. Especially for rewinding to see something you missed or didn't hear. So of course, on my boat about 10 times a day while watching TV, I grab the remote and look for the rewind button.... oh, wait, can't do that, no DVR. Now, having a real DVR probably won't help much, cause I'm not going to leave the thing on all the time to record stuff to watch later like at home... BUT, it would be GREAT if it had a small built in memory of say 1, 2 or 3 minutes of video saved. So while I'm watching something, I could rewind a minute or 2 if I miss something. What do ya think? Possible? Just add a couple megabytes or gigabytes of RAM to the receiver/controller, and stream the video/audio into the memory and give ability to rewind/FF on it. Just a small chunk so there is no need for a hard disk....
On a side note, I have an office right next (couple doors down) to the SeaTel manufacturing plant in Concord, Cali. I went to the front door to see if they had a showroom or something or to talk to a salesman, they said they would NOT let me in the building and escourted me out of the lobby. They stated it was "too dangerous" to be in the building. ??? What about the employees? What the heck were they paranoid about? Anywhoozle.
even if my boat could handle a 24" dish from either company(intellian or kvh). One retails for 8k and the other retails for 13k. and only having one tv on the boat it is a no brainer for me. my favorite entertainment channel is watching fish at night in the underwater lights with a cold beer in my hand.
Hi Birdman. It's my understanding, based on the letter we received, that 18-inch Ka-band dishes won't be able to discriminate between the signals from the adjacent Ka-band satellites (97 and 99 for example) and won't be able to maintain reception once those satellites start operating at their maximum legal transmission power in the future.
Glad to hear that you're enjoying your M1 so much!
My guess is because the sat's are so close together, and putting out so much power, the smaller dish can't separate the signal. Aka, much like the smaller radar radoms can't separate small targets close together as good as the larger open arrays do.
when are those new ka satellites going to be put into operation? three months or three years? that may sway me to go to dish network if the 18" ka band antenna wont work

Intellian is great! BUT.....
one must have all HD directtv receivers, and you must pay for them if you have directtv already. We have the newest Intellian, and since our 2001 yacht had four receivers we had to buy the new HDDVR for us to get HD. However, since the yacht had had directtv for 8 years, the receivers (4 of them) will have to be replaced (for $99 each receiver or $199 w/DVR) for each Hd receiver. BECAUSE, to watch HD in the main salon (with the HDDVR) all the NON HD receivers do not get a picture. Just a search screen appears with "searching for satellite"on the older receivers. The fact is that only one satellite is available, at a time to be received. So only the channels on that HD satellite are available. You need to check this out fully before you buy the system. Or you will spend more money then you thought!
Intellian is producing some very high quality satellite TV and Satcom antenna's. To take a quick comparison between brands go to www.battlewagonmounts.com. Check out the satellite antenna mounts page. When you click on each manufacturer there is a link to owners manuals for every model out there. They have links to KVH, Intellian, Sea King, Raymarine, and Sea Tel.
Help. The more info I read the more confused I get. I am looking for a sat dome for S. Fla. and bahamas. I want access to HD capability. I was going to buy the M5 because according to KVH site M3 is not HD. Now I hear great things about Intellian. Can I get HD on the M3 or not. Why does the KVH site say the M3 is not HD comp? Please help
if you want hd on directv you will need the kvh hd7 (24" antenna) $13k retail, or the intellian d4
(18"antenna) $5k retail, or the d6 (24" antenna) $7k retail.
if you want dish network hd, you can do as small as the Intellian i2 (13" antenna) $3k retail. that will get into bimini, maybe nassau. not sure about kvh and dish. your best bet is speak to a dealer or representative from each company and tell them the size of the boat, where in the bahamas you will be boating, etc so they can get you set up with the right antenna.
I would like to take the oportunity to aks KVH and Intellian which is their minimum size systems they would advice for Ku Band reception on an area with a 45 dBW EIRP level of satellite signal?

Exactly why I dont own any of these.
WAY TOO COMPLEX. Gives me a headache just trying to figure it out.

If you forget the HD crap, it can actually be VERY simple, and VERY cheap. And I agree with Ethan, HD on a 15", 20" or 25" display really makes no difference, it's not worth it on a boat if you ask me. If your outfitting a 60 Viking, and have the wad of cash to blow, sure, go for it. Pay an installer to do it right and drop $20k to get a real big dome, get HD receivers, and get a big HD monitor in the cabin, and pay nice monthly fee's for it all, have at it!!
But if your liek the rest of us low down, cashless grunts Get yourself a complete system for $2,100 (includes everything, dome, reciever, cables), install 4 screws to mount the dome, run one little cable from the dome to your cabin, plut it into the receiver and your done. Call Direct TV and add the $5 a month service to your home account for the boat.
The KVH M1, a nice small dish(look how small it is in my signature), simple install, works great, cheap at $2,100 on the web.
OR, break out the wad of cash and have a blast.....!!
in the bahamas the signal drops quicky (trying to keep signal beam off of cuba), an Intellian i2 or kvh m1 can have signal in one area and 10-15 miles south southeast be un receivable with a 13" dish and you may need 15" or 18" in those 15 miles. look at a coverage map from either company. you can see how the coverage pattern really bunches up between florida, bahamas and cuba.
