Default Glacier Bay Owners, a T-Ducer Install question

I will be buying the 2640 in the very near future. I would like to use an Airmar M260 t-ducer with my Furuno 582. Can a t-ducer this size (9" L x 5.5" W x 7.5" H) be installed in the bilge?

My other option is a 500W transom mounted t-ducer. I hear that these do not read bottom at cruising speeds. Is this right?

Damn thats a big "ducer"... with out actually going and looking at mine... I would say that probably is tooooo big... however..that said...without actually trying it.....hard to say.... you could try calling Rob Harty at Glacier Bay Customer Support I am confident he could help you.

As for the Transom ducer..... in flat calm water they do okay... but in a chop in deep water. .probably not....

Yes it's big. Its a tank with the transducer suspended in mineral oil. The above pic is of the R199, but the M256 looks the same.

Default Glacier Bay Owners, a T-Ducer Install question

MrPat,

The only real location on a 26GB to install a t-ducer of that size is in either hull at the transom in the well area in front of either engine. Its a major job and would be much easier with the engine off the boat. Its very hard to reach down in there and do a good job on the install with the motor mounted.

We install the Ray Marine supplied Air-Mar transom mounted triducers with excellent results. Starboard side hull, outboard of the engine and install it in the location the owners manual suggests. The only difference we do is mount the bracket all the way down to where it is at the bottom of the hull and that in turn extends the t-ducer way down in the water. You have to have a qaulity t-ducer to get away with this because the cheap ones will kick up from the extra water pressure.

If you are going to order your new boat it might be a good idea to supply your selling dealer with the M260 t-ducer and have Glacier Bay install it for you (which they probably would).

Default Glacier Bay Owners, a T-Ducer Install question

MrPat,
I'm in the same boat as you (no pun intended). I just bought the 2640 from Shamrock Marine in MD. and want to put in the Raymarine C120 unit with the DSM 250 Sounder. I was told by the dealer that you could only use a transom mount "triducer". The thing I heard about using the transom mount is that you loose bottom when running and in shallow water.
I hope someone on this board can set this question straight.
