Default Can You use a battery while charging???

I use a bait tank to keep Blue Back Herring Alive for freshwater stripers. It is not uncommon to buy/catch several dozen at a time. A lot of the time
we use them all but many times I have bait left over and if it is not too hot if I change part of the water I can keep them alive for several days.
It gets to be a pain in the rear to change batteries to keep the pump running.
My question is can you hook the charger up to the battery that is running the bait tank system and let it charge while running or will this screw up something
(battery charger, pump, battery, etc).

tprice,

Just get yourself a 12 volt power supply from Radio Shack to run the pump. Most chargers are not designed to charge the battery and provide current for a load at the same time. Some chargers have an "engine assist" setting that provides more juice, but it may be more than what you need and damage the battery.

OOPs I have been doing that for about 15 years...... I must have a I have a charger that allows for that somehow. Actually, it is a really oversized unit (in my Carver) that I put in myslef . But I know the one on my HS is lots smaller - I'll have to remember that!!

You can use the battery, BUT don't use more amps than your charging...like starting the motor. The charge might get a little overworked.

Hi Mumbler

Still got snow up there???

This was probably the worst winter I can remember in these parts...snow cold, etc. The freegin CT River froze over in Essex - only 5 miles from the Sound where its fairly brackish. I grew up there and don't ever remember that!! My daughter is still making weekend trips to Ithaca to see her boyfriend - actually she is there now

Mumberlone, let me clarify this.
If the pump pulls let say 5amps and the charger putting out 10 amps I will be ok???

I have an onboard charger for my trolling motor batteries but I also use another charger that is an automatic charger and can be set for 2/10/20 amps and
has a manual mode and an automatic mode. Would I continue to use the automatic mode or switch to manual??

Thanks for any help

short answer: yes, you can hook up a battery charger to a battery that is being used.

much longer answer: if your charger is rated at 10 amps max, and your baitwell 5 amps, then your batteries will charge while baitwell runs. if baitwell or load exceeds 10 amps, you will discharge batteries (albeit slower than w/o charger).

a good-quality smart charger rated at 10 amps will only put out 10 amps -- regardless of whether your battery is being drained at 20, 30 or 50 amps. so drain away, your charger won't melt.

finally, charger is no diff than alternator that charges battery while engine is running.
