Default Cave man mentality

I plan on buying a icom 402 in the next 2 weeks. Going on 22' cc bay boat. Fishing marsh and lakes in south Louisiana. I was going to put a 4' antenna by Digital. My fishing buddy says I need a 6' or better. I've seen good reviews on the Digital 4' and in my application I think it is a good match. Oh yeh, that is his rational on his opinoin..It's just "cave man mentality" on why you need bigger...it' all base on blah, blah, blah...At which point I'm lost. I realize that taller is better but at some point it must be an over kill. Your take?

Well it all depends on what kind of range you're looking for but in this case cave man mentality applies.......The bigger the better. 8 ft. will transmit further but if you don't need it then you don't need it.

I do some off shore occasionally and want all I can get out of it.

if you're not going offshore I think a base loaded 3 or 4 ft antenna will be fine.....once you start in the longer antennas the transmission pattern becomes a bit more sporatic even tho you are getting a db gain with the longer sticks...
