Default Sea Clear Navigation Software

I down loaded the Sea Clear Navigation Software free version and I have a Delorme LT 40 Earthmate GPS I trying to use with it. The GPS is a USB connection and everytime I load the program I get a message " can't communicate with com port 1". I tried to find info to reconfigure the program to read the GPS usb input but I'm not having any luck. Any suggestions? My computer skills are limited but you probably already figured that from the previous information.

Yeah the program is configured to look to port 1 and the GPS is in port 1. Funny thing the same GPS works with other programs. The GPS is configured to give nmea signals.I'm beginning to think that perhaps Sea Clear isn't compatable with Vista which is what my new lap top is. Sea Clear doesn't have a help line that I can find.

There are extensive discussions of the Sea Clear Software at www.cruisersforum.com and http://www.ssca.org/DiscBoard/index.php.

Remember that this is free software maintained in his spare time by someone who does this as a hobby.

And it does run on Vista for several people.

Com1, Com2, And Com3, ports are USUALLY serial ports, not USB ports. I suspect if you changed your cable to a serial port, it would work. As stated above Seaclear is freeware so you might be hardpressed to get an email response from the developer.

Thanks Capt Rick I sort of thought that but some of the SeaClear literature says it will work with a USB GPS. I wonder if there is and adapter to change USB to Serial?

There are a number of USB to serial adapters available, from less than $40 to over $100. Unfortunately, there are enough variations in usage that its a crapshoot to match things up. Check in at SSCA and read up on successful combinations of GPS. converter, operating system and software.

Can you read your PC in sunlight?

I have a pilothouse boat but it is difficult to read the PC. I carry my pc with me all the time so I was in hopes of using it as a back up GPS but I think a portable hand held would be better and have pretty much giving up on mating the USB to the Com Port. Most of the adapters I've seen go from Com Port to USB in other words they are converting the old technology to the new. I need the reverse.
