On my Garmin 162 I have the option of timing or resolution. It seems like I have changed it from the factory setting and not sure what that was. For tricky short channels I set it to like 1 or 2 seconds if I am running at speed. The only problem with that is I forget to change it back so the next time out of later that day I have used all my dedicated memory up and dont have a track for the begining. Seems like the factory setting was on the resolution side but don't know what it was???? anybody??? Belive me I am still learning about my unit and it seems like I never have time to play with it. Always busy fishing, which I guess is a good thing. One time I was playing with it, deep in the menu and I ran aground in the sound at Hatteras. My boys fessed up to blame for that one as they knew I was not paying attention where I was going at the time and thought I was out the channel and didn't say anything. You know the old saying the captin is never wrong. LOL

Billy,
Go to your setup menu and hilight "Tracks" and then hit the return. When the tracks menu comes up hit your "Menu" key again and the track log setup should come into view.
From there you should have a couple of choices of things you can do. The first is to set how your machine is going to act when the track log is full. There are two choices. The first is that it will simply stop recording a track log once its memory is full. The second, and the one you apparently have activated, is that it will wrap when full, which is to say it will continue recording your track and erase the earliest saved part of the track to free up memory for saving the part you are covering now. You choice but I believe the default is "Wrap".
Then there will be two other fields you can change to suite your desire. The first is the "Record Method" field where you can choose from Distance, Time, or Auto. The default is Auto. I have absolutly no doubt in the world that you fully understand the potential for distortion of the track as a function of speed changes that are associated with using the "time" option.
The third screen you can change is the Iterval selection. If you have your "record method set to Auto this one is one of those Least to Most choices with the default being "Normal". If you have set your record method to one of the two other choices you will be required to choose either the milage (0.06 being the default) or the time (30 seconds is the default) depending on your choice above.
So, to get back to it, get into the setup for tracks by going to Setup, then Tracks, then hitting the Menu key and then the defaults are: "Wrap When Full", "Auto," and "Normal".

Thanks Thom. I got all of it except I don't have a auto field. Just time, distance, and resultion. My time was set at 20 sec but I have changed that many times depending on what I am doing. Distance came up .06, resultion came up 82 ft. Not sure if the last 2 are defualts but you can make them whatever you want. I think the unit was in resultion mode when I 1st turned it on but that was 3 years ago. I guess I could figure out how many track point it will store and divide that by the avg amount of seconds in a fishing day and come up with a interval to set it at so I don't loose my start tracks. Like I said I set it to time and use 1 or 2 seconds when I want to save a tight trick channel. I might go back to resultion as with the WAAS upgrade it might work better all around. This little unit has a lot of functions I am still learning about. Not bad for a 400$ maping GPS.

I set my GPS to store based on a distance interval, not a time interval. If I am laying down a detailed track I want to save I use a resolution of .05NM and this gives my unit a constant storage of 115NM before it wraps and starts overwriting old points. If you use timed storage you end up overwriting eariler points even when you are anchored up.
