RE: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
yes it is compatible. you will need a CaNet kit from Garmin. Currently I am installing one on a 270da sea ray. I have the fuel sensor hooked up but need to wire it this coming weekend
Re: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
below is a link to the CaNet cable. I have just hooked up the senor into the fuel line and I am currently waiting for my CaNet Cable so that can wire it up next weekend.
RE: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
No you do not need a CANet cable. You can make your own with a 22 Gauge 4 conductor shielded cable and two 120 ohm resistors for the terminators. This is what it looks like fired up.
Re: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
I will not know until I test it on the water. It will be a week or so before I have a chance. I have to finish my other boat first. It will have mpg, gph, fuel tank level for sure.
RE: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
This is a recent addition to the 500 seriesv 3.10 software update so the info is stillan annomaly please keepus posted Ed... You can also connect to the GMI 10. Thanks
Re: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
I talked to Garmin today. It looks like fuel level is only on the information page. All they do is use the simulator so it is not real life. Give me a few days to get the boat on the water and I will give it to you straight. A few bucks for the resistors and the shielded cable is all you will need for the install on your 5XX GPS. One thing I noticed is that it will not register below 2 GPM at this time running the engine at 1500 RPM without a load. . All I want is best MPG at 2500 RPM or above as this is where my Etec 90 will plane the boat. Fuel Level is a bonus and If I can calibrate it with the Manufactures spec's using some 2 percent resistors at the different levels I will be all set. Once on the water I will find out what the minimum flow rate will be displayed.

Very good,
When you report back to the board, please give details on the how toassemble and where to buythe 22 Gauge 4 conductor shielded cable and two 120 ohm resistors for the terminators for us lest than electracial expertise boat owner.
Thank you ever so much.

Re: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
Where did you guys buy your unit? I checked a couple of online stores and they all seemed to be out-of-stock. From what I am reading is it correct to say the unit does not come complete ready for install but that I need some resistors and cables? Also is it real difficult to install? I have a Garmin 545S.

Hi Ed,
If you get the chance, Please, please, post the details of your install, given where to buy the 22 gauge 4 conductor shielded cable and the two 120 ohm resistors for the terminators and how you attached everything for us lest than electrical expertise boat owner such am I.

Re: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
The resistors are 1/4 watt 2% 120 Ohm resistors you can get at any electronic supply house or Radio shack. The 4 conductor shielded cable I used was Belden 8723 2PR22 shielded. It also can be gotten at any electronic supply house.
If you have the basic soldering and wiring skills then it should not be a problem. The system does require you to know basic communications and networking otherwise you are better off having someone that has those skills do it for you.
RE: Is the Garmin 545 compatible with Garmin GFS 10 Fuel Sensor
Does it look like this?
CANet Adapter Green ---> 545 Green CANet L (120 Ohm term across Green and White both ends)
CANet Adapter White ---> 545 White CANet H
CANet Adapter Bare ---> 545 Black (Ground)
CANet Adapter Black/White ---> Ground
GFS10 Orange fuel level ---> 545 One of the NMEA inputs?

Ed .....
Thanks for taking the time to take then post the pictures of your Garmin 535 & GFS 10 Fuel Sensor. I've resized one of them so we could get a better view of the CANET display page.

Orange goes to Orange at the GPS (accessory on)
That is correct. The drain wire and black/ white are connected to Ground at the GPS end. I staggered the resistor by the sensor end and after soldering put some heat shrink tubing over the green and white wires including the resistor. I cut the red wire off from the 4 conductor cable and soldered and heat shrunk the black wire to the black/white on the pigtail. I soldered the drain wires together and then put some heat shrink tubing ( adhesive inside) over the slice and shrunk it tight. On the other end I cut the cables to length after stripping it first so I have enough length of the brown and gray wires that go to the fuel gauge. I alsocut and soldered the fuse holder with a 6" tailto the cut length of the power cable from the sensor. Red/white to red/white then to 12vdc + from the fuse holder. Black and Drain wire from GPS, Black/white and drain wire from spliced cable from the sensor and black and drain wire from the sliced in 4 conductor (red wire cut off at both ends as it is not needed)all get connected together to ground. Orange to orange. Green to Green and white to white with resistor solder between the green and white. Brown and gray go to the fuel gauge. Heat shrink and tape everything and after wire tying everything after testing first you are done.
