A lttle more information would help.

Budget?
How deep and how shallow?
Where do you fish?
Type of boat?

Which is best can take you from $200 units up to a few thousand.

I'm about to install a Furuno 620 with the Airmar B-60 ducer. I had the 600L with the transom mount and it worked great until 16+ mph. I had no real issues with it in shallow water but I've elected to go with the thru-hull for better performance this time. Some seem to get great service from a transom mount but I never could after many adjustments. If you can swing the cost and plan on really relying on a bottom machine in 50+ feet I personally dont think you'll regret spending the cash for a Furuno 620.

I also ran a black/white Garmin in shallow water and for the money it was a jam up machine. If I were going to do more shallow water fishing I'd consider one of the Garmin units. Just my .02
