When punching in numbers for a new waypoint the letters come before the numbers if you know what I mean. It seems like when I first got it, when you punched the number it came up first and not the letter. 1abc 2def 3ghi etc. If my memory serves me correct, how do I get the numbers to come before the letters? Any help appreciated in advance. Thanks......Danny
When you have the waypoint page up and are beginning to enter a new waypoint you can increase or decrease the numbers by just hitting the up or down key on the rocker switch. The letters will not be involved as when using the straight keyboard.
So you can just take your cursor out on the map to somewhere close to your desired waypoint and hit the enter key and then, depending on how long you hold it down (just hit it and you are given the choice of creating a waypoint from the object identification page, but if you hold it down for a second it will take you directly to the new waypoint page) it will put you into the process of creating a new waypoint. In either case what you would do next is clean up what you have in there by basically editing the number it landed on when you hit the key. Of course if you do it this way you really don't even have to be close with that cursor, though it is nice to be in the same hemisphere so you don't get the N mixed up with the S or the E mixed up with the W.
Anyway that's your answer, the rocker switch keeps you in the numbers mode for the data entry (it also toggles between North and South and East and West).
By the way, and maybe this just occured to me because I just got up and my mind is doing fuzzy morning stuff at the moment, when a person says "Any help appreciated in advance. Thanks..." does that mean that they don't intend to thank you once you've given them what they want?

I'm not sure exactly what I meant Thom, but I was hoping to get a reply from you. You've been a lot of help to me in the past. Thanks for the third time. LOL.........Danny
I'm new to this electronics forum but have been considering buying either the Garmin 182C ($1,000) or the Garmin 2006 monocrome ($1,200). The 2006 has a much larger screen and the pixels are much better. Is the screen size and the pixels per square inch worth losing the color the 182C has? Thanks for any advice.
If it were me, I'd opt for the higher resolution and screen size.
I bought the 2010C and got the best of both worlds, but my contingency plan was to go with the 2006 mono if I couldn't fit the 2010C in the budget.
Oh, I don't know about the 2006, but my 2010C has a port in the back that Garmin has reserved for 'future use'. The Garmin support people couldn't or wouldn't tell me what it was for, but I'm interested. Don't know if the 182 has this port.
Have fun shopping for electronics - and for heaven's sake, DON'T BUY FROM WEST MARINE!!
Can you comment more on West Marine? Also, since I posted the question, I've done a couple of searches on the 2006 vs. 182C and it appears that the response has been to go with the screen size and the pixels per square inch.
Basically, WM has donated a significant amount of money to an organization called The Ocean Conservancy. TOC is dedicated, among other things, to greatly reducing and eventually eliminating recreational fishing along the coasts of our country. Specifically, TOC has said (and you can find this on their website) that FL recreational anglers are responsible for catching more fish than the FL commercial boats. Right . . .
Anyway, the way I see it is if WM wants to donate their cash to this effort - go for it. Just don't expect me to spend any of my money at your stores, websites, what have you. For more info go here:
Oh, and by the way - Anheuser-Busch is donating money to the same organization.
The Garmin 2006 is a nice machine. The BlueCharts software is also top-notch. You'll appreciate that screen size when you're not at the helm, but want to see what's happening downstairs.
I did not use the extra port for the black box.
Box used 12 volt power and two signal wires from the harness on the 2006c.
Maybe it could be used for it but the instructions did not say to.
