Default Ques. GARMIN USB 2.0 Reader & Software

I'm looking to create waypoints and routes on my home PC, including being able to download the latest updates for my Garmin 3210 and 3005. I just bought the Garmin USB 2.0 Data Cd programmer. I don't have a software program - so I went on the Garmin Website and downloaded for free the Marine updater software. What else do I need? I have an old Update Card - that Garmin said "you can keep it and use it for other downloads". But I can't seem to get them to be read by the software. I think I need a trip planner software? or Maybe Mapsource in order to create waypoints and routes?

Anyone with experience with this would be great - I already did a search and did not see anything within the last year.

I think you might have to call Garmin Tech Support. I had to have them point the software to the particular comm port on the computer that the usb reader is plugged into. Why it doesn't do it automatically is beyond me.

Piece of cake.Here you go.

Here's the site for the USB Drivers just follow the on screen instructions.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsDetails.jsp?id=591&product=010-00528-00&cID=148&pID=390Here's the link to the Web Updater. You can install it right from the Garmin site. (you already have this)http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/The only other thing that you'll have to do before your ready to dwonload the latest updates from the Garmin site to your Garmin memory stick via the card reader is to format your Garmin memory stick by placing it the on the card slots located on the from of your 3210 and following the instructions below.Refer to page 65 of your owners manual.Once you format the memory stick for each unitit will automatically be ID'd by your card reader has your 3210 or 3005.There you go.Tom

BWP,

I think you answered half his question. The other part was what software would be needed to actually do the planning on his PC. I use Mapsource and am very happy with it. Any other suggestions?

That's it and I believe it's the only compatible software. It's what I use.

Thanks BWP....but...1st the updater software you recommended keeps asking me to connect an external GPS. second it does not see the USB Card reader or the User card that I tried to farmat with my 3210. Sorry but alot of ques. here.... the Garmin Trip Waypoint Manager I bought at Boatersworld does not have any specifics for Florida. Gonna call Garmin tomorrow - See what they say.

Map Source doesn't come with charts you have to buy them for your specific area. The most current version of Garmin Bluecahrts is V9.5 form(&110.00) . An unlock code comes with each CD that will permit you to use the area your interested in. If you want other areas thrn you'll purchase additional unloack codes.

You have to load the USB drivers 1st before you connect your Garmin card reader to your computer or all will be for not. It works as advertised if you follow the install directions to the "T". After you install the drivers and connect your card reader then when you insetr your formatted memory stick into the card reader it will see the memory stick as your 3210.

Bottomline:

If you don't install the card reader drivers first you nothing will work.

OK...I wanted to update this post for future readers. First, the software needed is Bluechart Americas by Mapsource (Garmin). The GARMIN Trip & Waypoint manager does not work for marine applications (No marine charts) - so this was a needless purchase on my part. Also, they have a newer software versionof Bluechart Americas - "Bluechart 2008", but it has not shipped out to dealers yet (Not at WestMarine). Garmin was nice enough to say that should I buy the older version Bluechart Americas Version 9.5 now and provide proof, they would provideme the 2008 Unlock codes when its available, for FREE and they sent me an email confirming this! Second, although not mentioned in the box I received, YOU HAVE TO INSTALL THE DRIVERS FIRST BEFOREATTACHING THE USB CARD READER. You also need to be careful that your USB port at your computer is a 2.0 (Fast) speed ready or there may be a problem withdownloading the updates to the card. Also, there is a potential problem for those that connect the USB 2.0 Card Reader to a USB Hub (Multi USB's). You may need to connect directly to the back of your computer, instead. My USB port at my computer is an older version, so Ihave that problem now anduntil I geta newer USB port in my PC that reads at the newer 2.0 speeds, I have to manually download to my cards (Online). Thirdly, you have to buy a blank User card with at least 32MB of memory, or your downloads won't fit. Most ofwhat I'm saying here is not contained in any literature or its sporadicallyplaced. Also, the Bluechart Americas software will require an "unlocking" code that comes in the software package, but this will require that you have with you at time of installation your GPS Unit serial number, becauseeach "unlock" code is specific to only one GPS unit. Garmin will give you a second "unlocking" code for free, if you have a second unit. I have a second and will require another "unlocking" code.

Hopefully, this will help some members - this infois for those readers similar to my situation - i.e. GPS 3210 & 3005 and with a 2.0 USB Card Readerwishing to download version updates and create waypoints and routes on your PC.GARMIN was very helpful and a special thanks to BWP.
