It appears that the GSD 21 sounder is analog and the GSD 22 is digital. Is the GSD 22 worth the price difference? Do you notice much or any difference on the screen? It will connected to a 4208 chartplotter.
You can't use a GSD21 with a 4208 (it will only take the network sounder GSD-22), so that kind of makes the choice real simple. That aside, the gsd22 is a better sounder than the gsd-21.
Will the older series 3010c displays work with the 22 sounder?

Joe, thank you looing to upgrade the sounder and radar attached to the 3010; now i just need to figure out if the new HD radars will work as well.

Why won't the GSD21/ 4208 work with the CANet?
I was wondering the same, but I doubt with a new unit like the 4xxx series I would want old technology like the GSD 21.
I bought the GSD 22 just because you can use a sounder up to 2kW. You might not want to spend the money on one now, but what about in the future. The GSD 21 is old news, technolgy is moving along. If you go to the Airmar site and compare the transom mount p 79 to a 1KW M 260 at 50 KHz it is 50 times stronger, at 200 KHz, it is 13 times stronger. Now jump to the R 199 a 2KW sounder and the difference is astounding. At 50 KHz it is 200 times stronger, at 200 KHz it is 32 times stronger. Just something to think about.

Why won't the GSD21/ 4208 work with the CANet?
Because the 4000 and 5000 series don't have/support the traditional Garmin CANnet. Their CAN format port is for NMEA 2000 only.

Hmmm..I'm not sure that is true. The 4208 firmware upgrade download references that upgrading the firmware will necessarily upgrade the firwmare of anything attached to it, and the GSD 21 is listed.
Okay..i called Garmin asking some stuff about the upcoming 4210, and while i was on theer asked about the GSD21 and 4208 thing above.
He said"nope" won't work, and the mention of it in the firmware notes was a typo, and should have been GSD22..although I think that is already mentioned in there. Regardless, he stated twice that the GSD21 will not work with the 4208.
I also found out that the NMEA from the unit is now 2 way, (at one time, it was only output) and that it should give information to the Yamaha Command link gauges via NMEA2k info..but he wasn't sure either. Also, they will be making a Command link to garmin cable sometime around when the 4210 comes out..whihc may be March or April.
Steve4266, the Airmar site does not list the R199 as compatible with Garmin, only the M260 listed--has this been updated? Will the R199 work with the GSD22
cnthings, I spoke to a girl at Airmar and I was told that they had the R199 available for the GSD22. I have not purchased one yet. I am still trying to save the 2200 dollars that it will cost. The R199 is 2kw and the GSD22 can handle 2kw. I would contact Airmar and got the stock numbers from them. If you have the money and the room to install the R199, I would go that route. The R199 is 17.8 inches long make sure you have the room for it.
Not sure how long the GSD 22 has been out but yes, I am talking about the 22, not the 21.
Already have a seperate Furuno bottom machine but If I can stumble across someone who installed the GSD22 and decided to go a different route, I would be willing to ADD a sounder to my Garmin as backup, IF I can pick up one up used. Not willing to pay $535 to buy a new one.
