I am in the process of specing out a stereo for my new Hydra Sport 3300CC. I'm leaning toward a Polyplanar MRD-70 head
and JL Speakers (sub, and amp).
I am planning on mounting a pair of 7.7" coax up in the bow seating area and 2-Subs facing each other mounted on the inside cockpit near the helm.
My problem is what to use for (and where to mount) the speakers back near the helm. The installer was recommending Bose cubes, but I can't find any such speakers on the Bose web site. He thinks we should go with an enclosed speaker up and under the T-Top.
Does anyone have a great, compact, enclosed co-ax that I can mount up under the T-Top?
My other choice would be to install another pair of 7.7" co-ax's next to the subs on either side of the cockpit near the helm.
PVC caps huh? First off leave the Poly and go with the Clarion CMD5. The poly requires a black box for the RCA cables and a black box to allow an Aux input. The Clarion has 3 sets of rca outputs, can control and IPOD from the stereo or remote and has a selectable aux input sensitivity. The BOSE cubs are a waste. Peytonlac boat is set up correctly, have it done by someone who knows AUDIO systems. I know guys who are GREAT with setting up and installing electronics but dont have a clue about audio. Where is your boat located?

I agree. I have been looking at marine audio systems for a while now and plan to install one in my boat this spring. From what I've seen, the Polyplanars are good but the Clarion CMD5 is, hands down, the way to go. I am currently shopping prices on this unit. If you haven't looked at it I suggest you do. Good luck.
SWFL showed where JL is about to release some pod speakers in the coming year.
Aquatic AV has a head unit with RF remote (much better range), DVD (if you are so inclined) and integrated Ipod controls as well as the usual stuff like Sirius, etc.

I said the same thing about the caps. I heard the system on the boat before and after the cap install and there was a big difference. This particular boat did not have any spots in the hull that made a good sound chamber.
I like the spec on the Clarion CMD 5 and the ability to mount it below (for the Ipod) and put a remote on the dash to manage the Ipod, but it looks alot like the one that Hydrasport offers for cheap. Now I'm thnking about buyng the HS optional system, keeping the Ipod at the helm and modifying it to add subs and another amp. Does anyone know what the specs are for the Clarion system that HS offers?

SWFLNavigation -- The boat will be coming from Eagle Marine in Sagamore Beach, MA. They have a competent installer, but clearly suspect on the design side. They'll intall whatever I design and I can drop ship product. They'll probably let me bring a thrid party installer, but I'd prefer to let them do it -- once I have the design right.
I have used spray foam to form chambers with very good results. Use a rubber glove with cooking spray on it to form the chamber while spraying in the product. I use the back of my hand. Air tight, no vibrations and tends to stiffen the hull sides on two piece boats. Good luck. I am doing the same on the surround sound wall speakers in my addition.

The JL amps
JL speakers at the rear - more important than the fronts!
JL helm speakers
JL front speakers - turned down to 60% gain
computer fans that go on w/ amps
only change I'd make if doing it again is I'd use JL coaxials instead of 7.7's - less holes/same sound
I finally got my system the way I want it. I kept my Rockford Fosgate 1200 watt amp and I put in the JL speakers, and I just installed the JBL black box stereo. I'm really liking that stereo, it has the Serius reciever connected to it via one din cable, no extra power or RCA cables, nice and clean. I also have a waterproof wireless RF remote being delivered today, this will allow me to control the radio from anywhere on or around the boat. It also has the ipod input (aux) so no more FM modulator. The sound quality and functions are awsome and you can hose it down.
After years of going through "marine radios" I finally feel like I actually have a stereo designed for open boats.
I have to say that Polyplanar has about the best warranty in the industry. I had mine installed October of 06 and just replaced it for the 3rd time. They better have a good warranty because my unit didn't ever work. If this one goes out, it's going in the trash and I'm going for the Clarion.
