Default VHF Antenna

I currently have the Shakespeare Model 5241 3' VHF antenna (3 dB) and have the impression that the reception is less than adequate for inshore (up to 6 miles out). Along with a hearing deficiency, I have trouble understanding what is being said over the radio (Standard Horizon Eclipse).

Although the quality/clarity of sound is probably the fault of the radio, I'm thinking I should first change to an 8' foot antenna (6 dB) to increase the range, and hopefully be better able to understand what I hear. I'm looking at the 8' Shakespeare Galaxy Model 5225-XT VHF antenna.

Good choice? Comments?

How is it with signals that you know are close by? If these are weak then try an external speaker. You can get a small PA horn type for about $20 and aim it towards where you head should be.

The 5225-XT is a great choice for antenna. I have used these for years and have never had a problem. Two on my boat now.

I also have the SH Spectrum and the SH Eclipse on my boat. You can easily notice the clarity difference between the two. The Eclipse isn't a bad VHF it just isn't in the same league as the Spectrum.

Take the extra time to make sure the connector is done right. If you rush this part, it won't make a bit of difference what VHF you have.

An external speaker may help but a PA horn may be overkill and hard on your hearing!

Auguste - VOLUME CONTROL

By the way, your favorite thing in the whole wide world looks very fine. And your boat is nice too.

My respects to the admiral.

I have a Standard Titan+ radio on my old boat. I added the Standard external speaker that made all the difference in the world as far as being able to hear it.

Unless you stay near shore, I would recommend an 8' Shakespear Galaxy or a DIGITAL Corp antenna that will give you better transmission and receiving capabilities.

Make sure your connector from antenna cable to radio is soldered on. I just discovered that my VHF was stuck on low because the connector was just jammed on the coax. Soldered it and now it works! Probably never got above Low in the two years I have had it!
