Default Marine Speakers

I have a couple of Bose 151 speakers that I have had on my boat for the past five years or so. Due to the limited space on my center console, I mounted them in the lean post where I also mount my batteries.

Recently they both stopped working. I took them apart to check the wiring and there doesn't seem to be a problem there. I took my Dremmel and cleaned up the terminals and checked them by hooking up to a stereo at home. Stll no sound.

My question is, could the speakers being located so close to the batteries cause the magnets to change polarity or somehow go bad?

That's the only conclusion I can see based on the fact that they both did it at the same time and there is absolutely no sound,(static, clicking, etc) coming out of these very expensive speakers.

Anyone know if this might be the case and is there a way to somehow fix the problem.

Thanks

No, the battery has nothing to do with them not working. The batteries may effect the sound of them due to the fact the bat's are full oflead and a speaker works by vibrating a magnet, but other than that, that's not your problem.

Check your radio, I bet the finals (amplifiers) in it shorted or something and blew the speakers out. 5 years is a pretty good duration for marine speakers if you ask me. Tey tend not to last too long due to the harsh environment.... Radio also.

Birdman:

When you say "blow out" a speaker, does it refer to the speaker cone being broken or is there an electronic component that blows (i.e. a fuse)that cannot be fixed or replaced? The stereo stopped working at the same time so can I surmise that there was a "short" somewhere that caused the speakers to blow out?

Thanks

Blowout: The act of any component thereof inclusive to but not limited to the device at hand, no longer working.

There is not fuse or replaceable component in the speakers, they either work or they don't. Whe nthey don't, throw them away and have fun picking out a new pair!

As for the radio not working at the same time, do you mean not working with those speakers connected? Or have you tried to connect a different pair of speakers to it? Does the display on the Radio light up?

My guess is this: Your radio does NOT light up at all. Also, your speakers do not work at all even conected to a different radio. If that is the case, you need a new radio AND a new set of speakers provided you have checked the fuse on the radio circuit. Most likely, something shorted in the radio which in turn, "blew out" your speakers with a surge of power.

Good luck.

kevdog- I have the 151 also. Don't they carry a five year warranty?
