Default Garmin 4212 - adding waypoints question

I am having the 4212 installed on the new boat. I know it will accept an SD card. I have waypoints in my computer that I want in the 4212 but manually adding will take forever. Can I simply create an Excel spreadsheet in a certain format to get all these numbers downloaded to the 4212?

What is the recommendation to get these numbers(100's of them) into the 4212?

Thanks.

Email the waypoints to me & I'll format them for you

Seriously, I'm thinking of installing a 4212 and would like to hear your review after you have used it

I'll tell you how it goes but it will be at least December before we get the boat and get to use it. A large part of my waypoints are where we caught certain fish, they are pelagic so they move around but I am looking for patterns of where I have caught fish.

As far as I know, you need either Garmin Bluecharts or Marine Waypoints & Trip Manager software to download/upload to the 4212. Garmin's software will export to an Excel file, but I haven't seen a way using either Garmin packages to import from an Excel file (there may be some software to convert an Excel file to Garmin format, but I don't know it). Once you have the waypoints in the Garmin format and either of these two software packages, you can save the waypoints to a SD card and then load them into the 4212. Bluewaterpirate posted step by step instructions which helped me transfer my waypoints into my 4212.

the way garmin recommends to send waypoints to your plotter is to use mapsource. i know that if you find a way to convert your exel files to csv or gpx it works. but its not the way garmin recommends it.....

Any idea of the cost of the Garmin software? Anyone use it already? Easy or difficult to use?

Mapsource Bluechart Americas (get the CD ROM version, not the data card) ranges in price from $110 - $150 depending on where you get it. The Trip & Waypoints Manager software is ~$25. Bluecharts provides more graphical information and comes with an unlock code toaccess charts in a particular area (this used to be required before the charts came standard with the unit - the 4212 comes with charts, except for the the G2 Vision card which is still extra). The charts in Bluecharts on your computer very similar to what you see on the 4212. The Trip & Waypoints Manager software is very vanilla having only basic map outlines, no details. Your waypoints and routes will show up graphically on both, and both can up/download to the SD card. Both are very easy to use (I have both due to having several sets of Garmin chartplotters over time). If all you are going to do is transfer waypoints, then I believe the Trip & Waypoints Manager software will work fine (my Garmin software is called Marine Waypoints & Trip Manager which is the same thing, I think).

Watch these two videos I did they will answer alot of your questions.

http://bluewaterpirate.phanfare.com/...ageID=20899645

At the end of fishing trip you can download your tracks from your unit for further display in Map Source. IIn this pictures you can see temps displayed from each tracj point. My Garmin 2206 & 545 will do this because I have them connected via NMEA to my Furuno 620. Here's what it looks like when displayed in Map Source. This trackand ffdata was downloaded from my Garmin 2206. You can see there is a wealth of info that can be pulled from your ff.

If I go with one of the software packages mentioned above, will I have to individually input each and every waypoint I want to add to the 4212? Or, can I do a download from an Excel spreadsheet. The main thing I am trying to do here is take all these waypoints that I have in my computer and get them into the 4212.

ExpertGPS is your ticket to ride. It will convert your excel numbers into Garmin Map Source. Here's their website. Cost is $60 and they have 30 day free download.
