They work by increasing the power from about 1/2 watt which is about where most phones transmit at. They increase the signal strength to 3 watts which is the maximum allowed by the FCC. They can increase cell phone range by up to 50 miles depending on antenna height, cable used, cell tower location, etc. Look at the Digital DA4000

A cell phone booster will work with any cellular device: wireless PC cards, wireless laptop cards and cell phones are all covered (except for Nextel cell service).

It works for me. I used DA4000 and Digital Antenna antenna 295-PW, direct connect to the phone though phone adapter cable. I used RG8X cable. You have to use 50 ohm cable. Dont use 75 Ohm cable (TV Cable). The bigger the cable the lesser the signal loss. The cable used and the the length (25') created about 2 db loss. RG8u Cable (Twice the size) created half the loss (less than 1 db in my case) higher the frequency the more signal loss through the cable. My set up works with all phone provider (except Nextel) including data card. I mount access port to connect the phone adapter cable to the booster in the dash with switch to turn the booster off when not in use. I found that the repeater type does not work on small boat (less than 40') too well(not enought separation distance between the antenna and the booster) Contact your local two way radio provider in your area they can help you set it up.

You could make Nextel service work, but you will have to get the booster that wll work with Nextel( they work on difference freqency). Wilson Antenna make one. Then you have to have the antenna that will work with it. It is too specific. With the other way, I can change my cell provider and my booster still work.

Yes you can boost your power, but the key is antenna height. You have to have awful high antenna's to transmit 50 miles.

I have a DA4000 unit I never installed .. Its just the unit no box or power cords or instructions, which all got lost .. You can buy these parts from Digital Antenna website..I will sell it for 75 bucks if anyone wants its. I guess I should post this in the market place section but never really thought of selling unit..
