Default ICOM M402 Compared to ICOM M502

Can anybody tell me the difference between the two when the 402 has the remote command mic option? I know the 502 has a larger front panel and screen...and a knob instead of an up/down channel selector...but I cannot determine what other advantages the 502 has over the 402 for the extra $100.

Thanks,
Joe

the knob is worth the $100 to me the first day in november when you can leave your GLOVES ON in order to change the channel!

Bigger speaker and according to my electronis guy keeps full rated power longer than the 402 when the mike is keyed. The 402 and a new Shakespere 5225 antenna are being installed in my boat as I type this.

Let's you program in selected frequencies to monitor while you are tuned to a favorite or preferred frequency. This is in addition to the Channel 16 scan function.

The 402 also has both of the above. There are only three differences:

1. Screen size, 502 is bigger.
2. 502 had knob for changing channels while 402 has up/down buttons.
3. The 502 takes up more space on a panel if flush mounted.
The electroncis are almost EXACTLY the same, inside.

I have two 402's. I bought it because of #3, the size was important to me. If it wasn't, I'd get the 502, simply because the channel knob is a nice feature.

My 402 has tag scanning and I didn't even know it?

Talk about learnig something new every day! The first thing I'm doing is getting the 402 manual out of the basement!

Yep!! I use it all the time, love it. See the word "TAG" on the display(just to the right of the 6, and under the BUSY icon)? That means that channel is tagged for scanning.... OR the word "SCAN" just above the channel UP button....

And, just for equal time, the 502:

Thanks guys....this helps a lot. Based on the input I'm going with the 402.

Now another question...are those remote command mics worth the $$$....any of you guys use them?

I just noticed every response except one was from the northeast ..... you guys must be really getting the bug with this great weather that finally rolled in!!!! Just got my new Saltwater Sportsman and it has a featured article on early stripers in NY & NJ...can't wait.

Yellow,
Thanks, your right. That's a real beauty. I just might add that thing, just for looks!!

HdgJoe,
I have the commmander mic connected to the 402. Works fine, it's only $90 so not really sure what you mean by "worth the money". If ya need a mic/controls at a 2nd location, it's priceless!! The only thing that really bothers me about it, is you can not turn on the main VHF unit from the commander mic. In other words, in order to use the commander mic, the VHF at the helm must be powered on. You can however turn the commander mic on and off without effecting the man unit, but ya can't turn on or off the main unit from commander. And that really sucks!! Other than that, it works fine and sounds the same regardless of broadcasting from the main mic or the commander mic.

I've got a 402 with the command mike. The actual radio is safely squirreled away in the console away from what little spray I get on the Regulator and the mike is onthe dash. It acts as a remote control as well as a remote speaker. The speaker part works fairly well but not really audible at high speeds. For the extra $100 I'd get one. The extra cable also means you can have converstations almost anywhere on my 23 footer.
