I have been trying to create routes on Rose Point's Coastal Explorer and transfer them to Garmin's 4212 using the SD card. Apparently CE uses a format not recognized by Garmin. Has anyone done this, or is there another program that can handle the translation? -- Thanks
Thanks for the tips. I have the latest MapSource but only have the City Select maps. I have the new g2 vision sd for the Chesapeake but don't have bluechart software to load into MapSource. I tried using MapSource to read the maps on the card but it doesn't recognize it. I can't imagine having to buy all the bluecharts to plan next year's trip from the Chesapeake to the Mississippi gulf coast.
You can get a lBlue Chart license for your particular area. By the way, don't use your G2 Vision SD in your reader. Buy another blank one at least 32 mb but no great than 2 gigsbecause your going to have to format by placing it in the SD slot on your 4212 before your turn the 4212 on. As your 4212 boots it formats your blank SD card so Map Source sees it as your 4212. You can download and upload from your 4212 or Map Source. Don't format your G2 Vision SD card.
Tom, I hope you don't mind but I feel alot of questions coming your way when my boat is ready and the 4212 is installed and I begin using it. I want a bathy chart and understand that I have to buy a SD reader and blank card and do something with it. Seems a round about way of getting the bathy info.
Go to Best Buy. SD card reader $17.50, 2GB SD card $24.00. A 2GB card will hold 3 or four CD's worth of charts and data. Do NOT buy a bigger card. The 4208 does not have the HC hardware to read and write to bigger capacity cards.
I have a 4208 and love Coastal Explorer too (it does such a nice job of integrating a variety of electronic charts.) However, there is, at the moment, a pretty big air gap between CE and my 4208. In the past I used PC based charting software for route planning and waypoint creation, and transferred it to my other Garmins using GPSU, a nice but very techy piece of freeware that does an incredible variety of data manpulations to allow me to squeeze, for example, a weeks worth of bareboat cruising the French West Indies into a Garmin Foretrex 101! It was a joy to use, and the only GPS available.
here there's a (tightwad) will, there will be a way! In the meantime, buy the Bluechart CD.

I'm buying a 4208. I have a PC. What do I need to buy additionally to create waypoints on my PC and be able to upload them to the 4208 and vice versa? And what if I want to mess around with trip routes on my PC and transfer routes to the 4208? I presume I need an SD card, of which I have plenty. Do I need a proprietary SD card reader or will any of them work? What software am I going to need? Do I need some sort of license?
Go to this Garmin site and build an account into the system. You use this account to register your Garmin products and in turn receive auto e-mails that tell you of updates to your garmin products. If you currently have a version of Map Source the update is free if you don't it will walk you thru the process for purchase.
1. I have to buy map Source - right?
b. Do I also have to buy charts in addition to the software?
2. What size SD card - Mini? (I tried the standard size and it doesn't fit)
3. I can just buy this SD Card from a computer store, or is it proprietary?
4. I think you have answered the reader Question - Need a mini reader - this isn't proprietary from Garmin correct?
5. The instructions also work for a 492C correct?
1. Yes. b. Yes, on cd, Garmin 010-10317-00, $140. 2. Standard SD card, 1" x 1.25". It will only fit facing one direction. 3. Yes 4. Standard SD cardreader. 5. Doesn't the 492 use the older Garmin cartridges? (3/4" x 1.5" with little handle) ((uses proprietary reader))

The 492 must use the old stuff because my "standard" SD card would not fit.
Hey UNCLEBENZ: I'm guessing you have the same problem I had. My 182c and your 492 use the proprietary Garmin data cards: 25/32" wide, 1 5/8" long, 7/32" thick with a little pop-out handle. Garmin has been using them for perhaps 10 years. There is a USB reader for them, that can be used by MapSource to move charts and all your waypoints, routes and tracks around to other GPSs. If you don't have a USB port, you can get a power/data cord with an attached 110VAC brick and take your GPS to your computer. Then use MapSource.
The USB reader is Garmin 010-10776-00, $50.00 msrp. The Power/data cable is Garmin 010-01276-00 $63.62. Call Jim at BOE. The mico SD cartridges are the size of my thumbnail, and are used by the very latest Garmin handhelds. Imagine all the World's nautical charts hiding under a postage stamp.

I have the card programmer/reader and the card (128 MB) on order - got a steal - $90 for both. I have Mapsource installed with the Blue Chart Americas - everything is great so far - ONE QUESTION:
I noticed that the "View" menu has a "View in Google Earth" option. I have Google Earth pro and its greyed out?

You have to have some tracks planned routes open to view it in Google Earth. It's actually a pretty coole feature; i took a 100 mile trip the other day (50 miles up, 50 mile ****** and viewed my track in Google Earth when I got back. Pure gadgetry, but cool nonetheless.
