NMEA 0183 output

I have recently purchased a Humminbird 997c. I also have an Icom M502 Vhf. Both are supposed to be NMEA 0183. I'm trying to hook up the two, so that I can use the positioning to send a distress signal, but there is nothing in the Humminbird book about which connectors or wires, or even wire colors are for the NMEA out. I know which ones are the NMEA in on the vhf, but any ideas on the 997? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

there is an optional cable for the attachment of additional devices. i bet the instructions are contained in the kit. no doubt, plug 3 will be the output (but what pins?) you might email them. be careful that the stock plug may not have pins at the output locations.....meaning you have to buy their special cord.
