Default Garmin 4208/4212 Radar Overlay?

So none of the screenshots I've seen show the radar overlaid on the chart, is the unit capable of doing this? Anyone have a screenshot?

Also why do the radar shots I've seen appear so hazy compared to other systems? The edges of the marks look very fuzzy. Is this right?

Does the Garmin require a heading sensor? Can't find it listed anywhere.

Garmin does not require a heading sensor, it does overlay just fine so long as you are moving. A heading sensor will help though. The edges of targets are not fuzzy at all, in fact resolution and clarity is great. It will not only overlay on the chart but it will overlay on the 3D Mariners eye too.

Interesting even over the 3-D.

Jim, which sytem would you go with Garmin 4200 series, Raymarine E80, or Furuno 1834? Would like to see the Garmin run. Garmin seems to be the best bang for the buck.

Another garmin Question:
In the nav chart it shows lat/Lon in one of the small boxes, can it show TD's and if so how do I do it? Are these boxes interchangeable like on 2006? Battery voltage, distance, etc...

The data boxes are interchangable. Setting them up is as simple as tapping the button next to the databox. Of all the current systems I would pick Garmin in a heartbeat. Nothing else even comes close to touching it. Ghe only reasons to go with another brand is if you want a very powerful radar for bird finding or the best FF. Raymarine still has the best FF.

I don't know th eanswer to the TD Q. Its raining now, but if it stops I'll go out back and check on my 5212.

Radar Chart overlays are interesting. The displays are crisp and clear. I'm in the process of finishing a 4212/GMR21 install. Radar returns show up inORANGE when used in conjunction with chart overlays. Once in the chart overlay mode you can depress the Menu Button on the face of the 4208/4212. This will give you two options:

1. Radar Setup ........ same as the cruising screen (cruising screen is covered in the owners manaul).

2. Chart Setup ......... same as the Navigation Chart menu

Zooming "in or out" is interesting ... if panning the display and you use the zoom feature the radar range stays the same and the chart range increases/decreases. If you are notpanning both the radar and chart range increase/decrease together. Minimum range for this selction is driven by the minimum range of the radar.

Data boxes on the 4000 or 5000 series are not customizable. You can turn data on or off but thats about it.

Capt Horance ... you can choose your position to diplayed in TD format. Press the Home Button and then press the Configure Button. From this page look for Units then select it. Look for the TD Menu.

Data boxes are customizable. There is a blank spot next to each soft key when you have the data bar turned on. Each spot is customizable by pressing the soft key next to it.
