Ethanol in Marine Fuel - Where to get it?

Should boaters use ethanol fuels? Have you tried ethanol in your boat?

Ethanol has caused nothing but trouble in the marine industry.

1. It dissolves most (if not all) fiberglass resins made before the 1990s. Put that crap in your older fiberglass fuel tank and you get black goop in the engine. And a dissolved fuel tank. And a possible explosion.

2. Ethanol absorbs water. So your water separating fuel filter does not work so well. But when the water reaches the saturation point and one more drop is added - the fuel separates from the ethanol, which by now is largely water. This happens fast and with no warning. So if you have E10, in the blink of an eye 10% of your fuel tank is turned into water. If you are running E85 even worse - 85% of your gas can turn into water. That water remover crap you put in your fuel tank is really just alcohol / ethanol.

3. The ethanol tends to make older rubber hoses, seals, and so on hard and brittle.

There may be more problems as well. Ethanol is really not such a good idea for boats. But it is going to be at a marina near you sometime, so get ready.

Rob, you may want to do a search here to see all the damage that this alternative fuel has caused. You may also want to do a search in general to see what a scam ethanol really is. All it has accomplished is to raise food prices and make agribusiness richer. Funny how you only have 2 posts both about this bane to boaters. Do you even boat or fish??

I will agree that there are problems with ethanol based fuels, however, if you are careful you can avoid some of the problems. E-10, 10% ethanol will not absorb 100% of itself resulting in 10% water. I do not have a chemistry book handy, but ethanol is only able to absorb a certain percentage of moisture, at a given temperature. As the temperature changes so does the ability of ethanol to hold the moisture.
I am into my third year of E-10, I have no choice. I have had no problems. One must check out their fuel tank type as well as condition inside. I have a friend who was towed in 8 times last year because over the course of twenty years of boating he had acculmuated a considerable ammount of moisture in his tank, more than the E-10 could bond to. With his old non E-10 fuel it just sat below his pickup line.

I can not even find E-anything down here. I guess Miami is anti-ethanol.

Really for my car, E10 would be cool. There would be no need to add any of that water remover crap to the truck. I dump some in every now and then (I have started using Seafoam which does the same thing) just to keep everything clean and clog free. If you get a new boat and use E10, I would imagine that you would not have water in the fuel problems or schmutz in the tank for some time due to the cleaning properties of that alcohol.

But in older boats it is a total disaster. Before E10 makes its way down here I am thinking I should have the boat fuel tanks professionally cleaned out and the fuel polished??? I have a 1999 boat so it should not be too bad. But you never know.

Ethanol my A$$ just another way to screw up my boating took me half the summer last year to get my boat right after I mixed that crap with the old gas in my tank.
