Updating Garmin GPS software

I'm having a problem with my 498C and Garmin suggests updating the software. I can get a card from them for free ($50 deposit, refunded when it's returned) or I can try to find a Garmin Data Management Kit which they no longer make but is available at some dealers.

Are Garmin cards unique or can I get a similar data card and reader from a computer supplier? The software is downloadable online, I just need to get it from my computer into my GPS.

I own a 492 --basically the same unit. It uses a Garmin specific card unfortunately.

You can actually get the card reader as an a la carte item, and then get a 32mb datacard and you have created what is/was the marine management kit minus the trip and waypoint manager disk.

Garmin sent me an update card for no charge - just ask them for it - then, send it back

The update kit (known as the Data Mgt Kit) was $54 at West Marine. You can use it to move and store waypoints, update software, etc... It includes a blank 32 mb Bluechart.

Installing the updates is easy...run the software...it locates the most recent version of the software and installs it on the card. All you do is turn the unit on, pop the card in, and it does the rest.
