I have a 182C and a GSD20 sounder which ran pretty well. I had a couple issues about the sounder's performace and I updated the software to the new version (5.20) as directed by garmin tech support. Now my 182c freezes very often an I have rto remove the power plug to reset it. It seems to happen only when the sounder is on. It happend to me about 12 times in a 4 hour period.
I also had a problem with my 2006 when I loaded 5.2. The unit would no recognize the antenna. Garmin's tech either does not keep up with the problems or will not admit to them. Other than that they are usually pretty good.
I did my 2010C w/sounder about a month ago. I also did updates for a few of my friends. Total of 3 2010C units, 3 2006 units and 2 182C units. All but 2 have sounder modules. None have had any problems of any kind.
I would check all connections to GPS antenna and cables. If problem still persists, call GARMIN tech support.
I am sending both units in to Garmin to let them figure it out. It seem like the 182c freezes only when the GSD20 is turned on. If I run just the 182c it seems to run ok.. I will post the outcome after Garmin does their magic..
Garmin updates are always free. I have an old Emap I use that is discontinued but still gets updates. JUst great support. check out their website. www.garmin.com
The display would freeze and turn a light blue color when viewing the sonar or the map (gps) screen. I was not using fish symbols and was in about 40 - 170 feet of water. The unit doesn't seem to work in deep water. I loose the bottom at about 350 feet on both frequencies (200 and 50). Maybe that is indicating a problem with the sounder? It is supposed to go to 1500 feet...
There is a message here for everybody. If your system is working OK with a particular software version (like 5.0), ALWAYS be sure you have saved a copy of that version in its' original download format before embarking on a new update load. At least you can get your system back up and running and let Garmin worry about the upgrade problem.
century 2201, you are correct, there was a big problem with the gsd20 shutting down the 2006c/182c under deep water conditions with the ICONS on. However, that condition completely shut down the 2006c and you had to physically unplug the gsd20 cable to the 2006c to restore even the GPS functions.
fisheye, you may also have a problem with your transducer alignment since you should be able to read depths to 1500 feet @ 200khz and to near 2000 feet @ 50khz. At least that has been my experience.
Garmins tech support is quite good. However, it depends on who you get on the other end of the line. I have had a couple of guys who should be pitching hay to the cows instead of answering technical problems. Fortunately, they are a minority.
I got the gear back from Garmin. They say that there was some "corrupt data" in the 182c that was causing it to lock up. They reloaded the software etc. and sent it back to me. I took the boat out this morning and it worked fine. I do not know what the real problem was...
