Default Need Help Choosing VHF Fixed Mount Radio

I am finally getting around to installing electronics on my boat. I venture offshore as much as 35 miles on select days. I need to select a VHF radio and antenna. The models I need help choosing among are the ICOM M502, M504, and the M602. Online prices range from about $200 for the M502 to $350 for the M602.

Other than the keypad on the M602, what features/benefits does it have over the new model M504. Based upon what I have been able to gather online, they appear very much alike. The M502 has also been highly recommended from people I have talked to recently.

I also would like to know if any of these radios will connect with my Lowrance LM 339C GPS for the DSC features. Also, which antenna would be recommended. I intend to mount the VHF in my center console and mount the antenna on the side of the console.

Thanks for your experience and opinions.

From the 3 radios you list, I would go for the 504. It out performs the 602 in many ways.

I'm going to be getting the 504 soon, and I'll be connecting it to a "Digital Antenna". The antenna and where you mount it is more critical in terms of performance than the actual radio which all basically do the same thing no matter which one you get. The main difference is the features you get.

What are some of the ways the 504 outperforms the 602. All I noticed from online descriptions was the submersible rating. I do realize the 504 is a new model so I am interested in the improvements/features added over the older models.

That is not entirely true. Here are some specs. for the radios.

502
Sensitivity = <0.25 uV

504
Sensitivity = <0.22 uV

602
Sensitivity = <0.32 uV

The 504 receiver is much more sensitive. This DOES give you better reception when comparing the units.

You may even want to take a look at the Uniden UM525. It has similiar specs to the 504 for less money!

The ICOM 422 is a .22uv radio, too.

ICOM 504 seems to be the favorite. How does the Uniden 625 compare in quality and performance?

Unless you need a Dual Zone load hailer/fog horn and color screen, I would stay with the Uniden 525 not the 625. The 525 has similiar specs to the ICOM 504 and can accept up to 4 wireless mics.
