Default New to LCX111 need help indentifying sonar. Take a look inside! Pic's enclosed....

In these pic's I am fishing fresh to brackish water in the delta of Northern California for White Sturgeon.

DEPTH: 30 to 60 ft.
COLORLINE: 70%
SENSITIVITY: 80 to 90%,
CHART SPEED: 100%
PING: 100%
SCREEN SIZE: full
UP & LOWER RANGE: Top either 10 - 20ft. Bottom roughly 10 ft or less below the bottom.
Transducer: Stock transom 600
BOAT SPEED: 5 to 7 mph.
I was told that with this unit my target specie 4 to 6 to 10 foot fish who only feed on the bottom (hense why I decided to cut out all above screen) that a target this large would be hallow and may not have much of an arch and color wise would be full of yellow?

These pics are actual pics created after viewing my sonar video recorded trip of the night before last.
Just trying to get an idea on how to identify size of suspended objects either slightly above or on the bottom where they feed. I also want to be able to get an idea of size and be able to determine specie based on size?

In the above pic the marks are very arched and a little yellow but not a lot. Do they seem like they can be the return of a 4 plus foot fish? Also, if you look to the Right you can see my anchor drop below them.

In this pic above it appears to me to be a large group I picked up off of a ledge?

In this pic is another large mark most likely a little larger than the other 2 scenarios I anchored below and the largest of the night for that matter.

Thanks in advance. I am going from a little 7" (Lowrance 350-A) monochrome screen to this 10.4 color and I am just trying to get caught up to the new millennium. lol, ZACK!

I have the same unit and I am still getting use to it. I turned mine into fish symbols instead of arches. and have it a little less sensitive than yours due to debris giving off false readings of fish. I really dont know if some of the arches are bigger fish or a couple fish close together. My guess is they are bigger fish.

Thanks for the response but I was kinda hoping to get somebody here who has a proficient understanding of the unit.

FYI: I would adjust your unit pretty close to the way I have mine with the exception of lowering the sensitivity a bit. Fish symbols are a joke, and you owe it to your investment to learn your unit. Where I fish there is tons of debris in the water from many different water plants flowing with the tide above the surface or below, lumber, trees, to you name its in there. ZACK!

Man,
this forum is GREAT for install advice, and software issues but I thought by now with how many here having the same unit as I I'd be getting some good user info by now??? ZACK!

Zack, I feel your pain. I just wet my 111 Wednesday after studying the manual and playing with the simulator for a month. My spin is if you are fishing in an area that normally has your target species and their are fish walking and talking like ducks, more than likely they are ducks err fish. Unfortunately the stripers had lock jaw the other day so I couldn't positively identify them either. In a perfect world we could keep our old units and do a side by side comparison. I temporarily switched to the fish symbol too just to see if my feel was right, and the bait appeared as bait and the bigger fish appeared bigger. I use downriggers, and the ball's signature was near the same as my old unit which gave me a little frame of reference. It was very windy and I was by myself so I didn't get to play with any jigs. You might try dropping various items to get a feel for size reference. Not a lot of help but a little empathy. After a few trips I'm sure everything will feel more comfortable. I'm still amazed at all the features my machine has and what it can actually do.Good luck!

Zack,

I saw these guys at the Sportsman's show in Portland. I got a few tips from them in the free hour session. Most of the info at the show was basic to me but not others. I just upgraded to the LCX 111 from a LMS320 so basic function is virtually the same. http://www.sonargpstraining.com/index.html

However, I have the same question about judging the size of what I see on screen. I am also targeting Sturgeon much of the time in the Columbia.

I caught their seminar at the San Meteo Ca, ISE. I'll give them a call some time this week per Captain Jack's request. I didn't stay for the gps segment just the sonar due to I had my 10 year old with me. Did I miss much? As soon as I get this Sturgeon thingy figured out I will pass it on to you and ask you do the same. Have you updated your unit yet? I have and as you can see have also recorded my sonar onto the SD card and got the download off of the lowrance site so I can view it. Have you tried this yet? ZACK!

I think i know that spot where you are holding that fish. I live in Alabama now but fished SF bay and moth ball fleet a lot in my 13 ft gregor. If you ever get a chance fish between the third row of ships from the bridge to the sand bar . Motor real slow till you come to the sand bar but don't stop. It will get real shallow then it will drop to 10 15ft or in a small chanel. Out going tide. My best in that same spot 90lbs and a 75lbs female which gave up some caviar. Let me know if you do any good. Fished for years before catching my first fish but after reading fishing for sturgen in SF by Abe chunang (spelling off) I was doing a whole lot better. Good luck fishing

I have not updated to v1.7 yet, possibly today. I have been having trouble with recording sonar and playing it on the PC. The first time I recorded to the HD and copied to the SD card and then got home and the file wouldn't open. Last week I tried recording to the SD card and I had the unit power down less than a minute after I started recording. I did get a small file recorded (175k) and it did open at home.

For the seminar the best hint I got on the GPS was to hit the Icon button and go fight your fish or whatever. Then you can come back sometime later. The coordinates are saved at the moment you hit the button.

I have the 104 and just bought the 113. Run your sensitivity as high as you can. This gives a better reading of whats down there. The size of the fish is more the thickness of the fish arch and not the length. They can be swimming and create a longer arches. I recommend you not use the fish symbols as they make anything in the water a fish. Arches are true fish. From my experience Sharks and Sturgeon make thinner lines as they have no airbladders and are long thin pencil lines. I found this out in areas of dogfish and one area of the Columbia River full of sturgeon. The bigger fish are the thicker fish arches. I constantly change the sensitivity as the number means nothing. When you change directions in the water, the sensitivy changes too on the screen. I had the 350-A and upgraded to the LCX-15, then LCX 104, and then the LCX113hd. I haven't tried recording yet but am sure it is easy. These units are so loaded with things to use, that I love them. I run the sensitivy high as you can. You can see shrimp and other things that they are feeding on. You need to see the whole picture.
