Default NMEA Garmin 2210 - Furuno FCV585

I really need some help figuring out how to make my Garmin 2210 and Furuno 585 communicate. Here's what I have done to date: wired per schematics, Garmin Blue to Furuno Yellow and Garmin Brown to Furuno White.

Adjusted Garmin unit, changed ports 1 and 2 to NMEA In/Out. Also turned off data sentences that were Garmin proprietary or not listed in the Furuno owners manual.

Adjusted Furuno unit, set to NMEA Ver 3.0; NMEA Port set to In/Out; NMEA Output set to On; WAAS Setup set to Off; TLL Output set to TLL

When the Furuno is in Demo mode, it is sending water temp and depth to the Garmin. When not in demo mode those data cells blink (no transducer hooked up yet).

However, the Furuno is not receiving any info from the Garmin. Switched Demo mode off, the lat and lon data fields are blank.

What am I missing?

did you check the Garmin's baud rate, some of their units default to 9600 baud, not 4800 like nmea 0183 is.

How do you check the baud rate? I paged through the menu's, didn't come across any way to change it?

I want to be able to use the "mark" feature on the Furuno. As an example, say you're trolling, get busy in the back of the boat, come back to the locator and see you that while you were away from the helm you passed over a school of fish or a reef and you want to mark it's position. When you hit the "mark" button, a cursor pops up on the screen which you can steer to whatever event it is that you want to capture, then you hit enter. The unit then asks if you want to save this spot (the spot you just marked from the past, not your current location) as a waypoint.

If I can get this feature to work, I can see it being very useful.

it should be wired like this

garmin blue to furuno yellow
then connect the furuno green to the black wire on the garmin, this is the ground for the garmin.

if you want to send date from the furuno back to the garmin, then you would connect

garmin brown to furuno white
then connect the furuno blue to the black wire on the garmin

ive never tried sending data from a furuno sounder to a garmin gps, so i'm not sure how or if that will work. usually the furuno sounders will only output depth and temp from the nmea output.

Garmin is so confusing and counter-intuitive the way they use the power ground for the nmea ground. Duct Tape laid it out well for you though, he knows his stuff

zx250,
Did this work for you? I just brought a Garmin from Jim and will be doing the same connection.

Please post some photos when you get it right. I am getting a 4212 and have the 585. The set-up should be the same. Thinking of NMEA is making my head spin.

Sorry for the delay in posting results. I took the boat in to the dealer to have an Airmar tilted element transducer installed, just got it back this week.

I wired it this morning following the above instructions of Duct Tape (basically just had to run the green and blue from Furuno to the Black of Garmin, I had everything else wired correctly).

The Garmin is now sending Position data to the Furuno. The Furuno is sending Depth and Water Temp data to the Garmin. They are definitely communicating.

The Mark feature on the Furuno does not appear to interface with the Garmin, will do more testing of that on the water as soon as the water thaws out here (hopefully next weekend). I hope I can get that to work, if anyone has any insight on this please post.

I have my Furuno 620 and Garmin 2206 connect via NMEA. I can display temp and depth on the Garmin. Here's what it looks like.
