Default Handheld VHF Radio for Ditch Bag

I'm trying to build my ditch bag for my offshore trips (25+ miles offshore). I know what EPIRB and handheld GPS units I want, but not real sure about the radio. Even if there is no concensus here, can you give me a couple of things to consider when purchasing a HH VHF radio for a ditch bag? Thanks in advance for your help.

I would stick with something that takes AA batteries. Since it will be in a ditch bag, it will not be charged regularly. rechargeable batteries will be damaged if stored forever and never charged. Plus they may not have a charge when you need them! i would recommend something like the ICOM M32.

It has both types of battery packs. AA and rechargeable.

The AA batt idea is a good one. Mine takes them but the radio has significantly less transmitting power using AA's. I have the Standard Horizon HX471S and love it. It has DSC so I mounted the cradle on the console & keep the radio charged & updated with NMEA data for position.

The key is to check the ditch bag before every trip..... Part of my "checklist" the night before any trip is to charge my handheld VHF, handheld GPS, check the EPIRB, etc. etc. that are in the ditch bag... That's just as important as having a ditch bag in the first place...

Amen on charging everything BEFORE the trip, same thing I do. I got a West Marine brand handheld VHF because of the long warranty, they gave me a free waterproof case for it (even though it is classified as "submersible", WM gives you the case to avoid liability), and it it craps out I know I can throw it on the counter and they'll give me a new one with no hassle. I haven't had any problems with mine.
