I need some recomendations on selecting either of these units. Primary uses would be boating in LIS. Most of the time is solo early am or after the kids go to bed. Will also be taking the boat off Montauk 2X a year. Plan on staying within 60 miles of the point. The boat is a Southport 26.
The PLB would be great for its smaller size, but I doubt that I would actaully wear it while under way so that may defeat some of the purpose of the samller size. Plus if I am wearing it and get knocked overboard, what are the chances that I would be conscious to activate the unit. The ACR406 Global fix is the one I see on most of the boats in my marina. These folks have it mounted on their hardtops. I do not have a hard top but rather a softtop and do not want to mount it up their. I would most likely keep either unit in a ditch bag with my VHF handheld and handheld GPS. Chances are that if I fall over the ditch bag won't fall over with me. After writing this and thinking off all the bad things that can happen while solo on a boat, I should probably get the PLB and make a practise of clipping it to my belt or inflatable vest (should start wearing that as well) while out solo. Pricing doesn't really come into play as it is a safety device.
Additionaly, in that I spend most of my time in LIS, should I consider a life raft. I can borrow or rent one for my trips to Montauk? Again, the raft will be in the counsel. Figure anything that is going to put me in the water would be so catastrophic as to not allow time to get to the raft.
Sorry about the lack of direction to this post, but just want make sure my kids have a father and my wife doesn't colloect on my life insurance policy.
I have the same concerns and have made a committment to wearing an inflatable PFD whenever alone on the boat. Also will be wearing the PLB (ordered on this deal) at all times on the boat. Have just ordered a HH VHF. If it's not too bulky, will wear it as well.
Been thinking about actually using the kill switch and/or tether when fishing solo
