I've never done it.. but I have seen special arrows for a bow that have a string attached that goes to a reel they mount on the side of the bow. I think I saw it on TV when they were shooting gators or something..... Maybe you could try this out there?... hmmmmmmmmm

They use those to shoot leopard sharks during breeding in shallow water in the Elkhorn Slough that runs into Monterey Bay.
If you do this keep in mind the fish is not where you see him. There is reflection/refraction at the surface of the water where it meets air. The fish is actually out away from you further than you think. The first time you shoot dead on and realize your spear/arrow didn’t go anywhere near the fish you will get the idea and figure out the appropriate adjustments.
Anyone tried shooting fish out of the boat with their spear gun?
ChuckB,
You should NEVER be loading your speargun out of water. Since most spear lines are high strenghth mono, they will have a whip lash effect when shot out of water. It is also not allowed in some states, you must be in the water. And if you are spearfishing, free dive, using scuba gear is not how it should be done. I feel it's unethical. BE SAFE!

And exactly why is it unethical, it is legal in my state and it is harder to get close to a fish with scuba than free diving.

Did it years back, I was just curious. Kind of pointless though. You can do better with a gaff or fishing rod with a treble hook on it. I would rather get in the water and shoot with a gun than the bow of the boat anyways.
what reel fishaholic said.....recently gaffed triple tails out of the water and into the fish box....tried to bare hand a few but that was unsuccessful
I shot my gun once in the front yard and almost killed myself from the back lash. This was my first gun and did not have any education on them and as i said I did this ONCE. Been a long time since that happened and I have learned to be a lot me safe since. I would not recommend shooting or loading a gun anywhere but in the water.
My buddy tried to shoot a huge grouper that was about 5 feet deep in baja. He missed. Would have been pretty cool to se him stick it. There are not to many chances to do it, but if you have one, might as well take a shot.
