RE: Final Report: USCGC Healy dive accident Thanks for posting that. I have been wondering what happened, now its pretty clear.
FWIW, I was almost on that cruise, hence my interest. Plus, I am a long-time diver.
About this time last year, I was contacted by the company supplying an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) to the civilian oceanographic, geology, and biology scientists on that boat. I was asked if I was interested in contracting as a navigation consultant, specifically to operate the underwater navigation system to track the ROV, and all the correspondending ship equipment. (the system being proposed was one of a number of systems that I had been product manager for with the manufacturer for 19 years.)
After going over the proposed installation and operation, looking at the specs of the Healy, I told them that their planned installation wouldnt work. When I told them what would be required to make that tracking system work on that boat in that ocean, they decided not to spend the time or money, and the tracking was cut out of the program.
SO, essentially by being an honest, consultant, I talked myself out of a contract. Oh well. I like to think I would have been at that dive site, and I am pretty sure I would have had some questions at several points during all that. I have dove under ice myself.
Enough of that. Thanks for the final report. |
