I'm thinking about fishing some of the West Delta rigs and it's either Pass A Loutre or Main Pass. Loutre would be the shorter route. Are there any hazards??
west delta rigs? do you mean main pass rigs?
to get to west delta run tiger or red
to get to main pass rigs i run baptiste collete...i would not risk pass a loutre to save a few minutes
I went through Pass A Loutre on opening day of red snapper season. My outdrives are now shiny aluminum, not black painted anymore. The Pass is very tricky to navigate and I wouldn't even take the Pass all the way to the Gulf.
There is a big sandbar on the right hand side as you enter the Pass out of the river. Once you get into the Pass there is another huge sandbar on the right-middle just before you get to the pipeline canal on the right hand side. You almost have to run against the left side bank to get by it.
The best route after you get past that sandbar is to take the pipeline canal on the right and run through Northeast Pass into the Gulf.
We had engine trouble and ended up limping home on one engine so decided to take the Pass from the Gulf all the way to the River. The water depth averaged 3 feet or less from the lighthouse at the Gulf until we got to the area where the pipeline previously mentioned is located.
Some dredging may have been done since then, but it is so silted in that I don't consider it a possible route anymore.
Thanks for all the help guys. I wound up going through Baptise Collete/Main Pass. Came back in through South Pass.... took a beating coming in when the weather turned to crap. Not to mention the work boats up by us on the rigs that we fished.... talk about aggravating!
The pass isn't that bad but wouldn't do it for the first time unless you take it slow. I could probably describe the route to SE pass by typing but won't waste your time unless really interested.
Be happy to show anyone willing to follow me if I'm available. I leave that way near 80% of the time.
I've run Joseph Bayou into East Bay quite a few times. I always hang a right before I get to the end and go out through the location canals. You should be able to easily see what I'm talking about on a map. When you get to the mouth, there will be a line of pilings leading you out. DO NOT cross the pilings on the North side as they just dredged the channel and the spoil is not really visible. Stay tight to the pilings on the S side and ride them for a mile or so before you turn S into East Bay.
Lots of crazy wellheads in the area so keep your eyes peeled.
