Default Fishing in Pascagoula Ms area?

My son and I are headed down to Pascagoula in a couple weeks and I am considering dragging my 20' Mako CC down to do some fishing. Would it be worth trailering my boat down or is there boat rentals in that area and is there any decent fishing relatively close in. I don't want to have to make long runs in an area I'm not too familiar with. I live in the Washington D.C. area and it may be cheaper to rent a boat there than trailer my boat down. Also, are there any area specific boat course requirements to rent boats in the Ms gulf are. I am 54 years old and have owned and operated boats for many years and completed numerous boat safety courses in several different states but don't have any certificates or proof of completion. One other option would be if any of you fellow fishermen would take me and my son out for a day of fishing I can buy gas and provisions for the day trip.

Thanks in advance...Paul

i dont think i would trailer that distance as there are just to many chances for prob that could spoil a trip,as a result of katrina many boats have been damaged here on the ms coast and as a result it may be hard to find a rental, there are also the concern of debris that may still be present in the water ways,a guide service may be in order here, there may be someone else to chime in here that may offer some advise as to rentals/guides. good luck and have a safe time here on the GOM.

Are there any public piers or shore locations we could fish from and if so what fishies could we expect to catch? I Katrina tore the place up; that's one of the reasons we are headed down. I have three sisters in that area and my oldest son lives in La Place, La. Going down to visit family and try to get a little pullage in. How bad did Mobile bay get tore up by Katrina?

Bayou La Batre got hit hard, the West End of Dauphin Island is a mess, and the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay received some damage. However, the speckled trout fishing is on fire. I have to agree, leave the boat at home and charter a guide. I'm sure there are some good guides in the Pascagoula area. Worst case get one out of Dauphin Island, it's only about 45 minutes from Pascagoula.

Start a new thread in the the Gulf Coast section looking for someone to catch a ride fishing with and on which dates you will be down. You should get a couple of offers/opportunities as long as you post it with advanced enough notice.

Makoman,

There are no piers (or anything else, for that matter) remaining along the MS coast. Most beaches are still closed, though Biloxi and Gulfport have been working hard to get theirs open. There is still a fair bit of floating debris, but it is not 'everywhere'. More than enough submerged stuff just beneath the surface to keep you entertained

Most people in this area are still putting Humpty back together again, and finding a ride offshore is probably going to be much more difficult than if Katrina had not hit. The impact to all of the fisheries has been substantial, though the near shore action seems to be back on par. Offshore is a much different, and sadder, story.

If you are coming down for reasons other than fishing and were thinking bringing the boat might add to the trip, then bring it. You will be able to fish, and you will also be able to see firsthand what the people here are dealing with. Take a ride around the bays and along the coast in your boat. Sobering.

BUT - weain'tacryin'andweain'tawhinin' - we are kicking debris azz and getting the job done, one board and brick at a time. This was, and still is, a beautiful place to live; we are just undergoing a major makeover

Come on down.

The nearest piers are gonna be on Dauphin Island,AL. The Dauphin Island Pier & Cedar Point pier are open for business.

The ramp at the end of Beach Blvd in Pascagoula is open and quite busy. It is a beautiful run to Horn,Sand and Petit Bois Islands. I have a number of friends with sail boats and they say the coast is clear. In Pascagoula most of the debris washed inland to hwy 90.
There is lot's of good fishing both on and around the Islands!

The wade fishing has been good around the OS area from what I've heard.

If you do bring your boat, I'd suggest going out to Pettit Bois Island for wade fishing the grass flats and tidal creeks on the north side. Fishing/trolling down the beach side in the surf will also produce some nice spanish makerel.
The points between east/west Ship Islands are good to for other species.

i have been wade fishing in front the college in long beach with good results. about 30 minute drive from goula. also been tearing up the specks in graveline bayou. you can fish it from the bank but, slow trolling is the way to go.whatever you decide keep in mind thier is no place to get live bait here. with the extensive damage to the shrimping industry here thier is an abundance of shrimp in the water and i believe that is a major part of why so many large trout nearshore. so when you get here i suggest you match the hatch. many guys swear buy rubber cocahoe's. especialy white ones. i myself, being a live bait fisher have torn many a net on debris and decided that berkly gulp's are the way to go. and as always its hard to go wrong with a good ole D.O.A. our trout have excellent vision so i would also suggest using a flourocarbon leader. and if you do get on a boat, try the north shore of ship island. around daybreak thismorning, calm water, overcast skies. no record breakers but, thier is nothing quite like working a top water lure in calm water when the bite is on. good times
