Default Live Bait in Destin??????

Looking for some help on where to get some live bait. Where do people go to catch there live bait in Destin? Do they throw cast nets near docks in the bay? Drop sabiki rigs near the jetties going out the pass?

Thanks for the tips

Leave early and watch what everyone else does. Not many secrets in catching bait at the pass.

catch pinfish off the docks in the harbor off of squid tipped bait rigs. This morning, the bait boat was just in front of harborwalk selling pinfish. Unless your knocking down hardtails just outside the pass don't bother with it. Cigar minnows catch snapper, and you can't keep them. Take frozen squid and boston mackeral, and shoot down mingos and pogies for da big boys!

You can usually catch bait early in the morning by the first large marker just southwest of the pass. Use sabiki.

Also just watch were everyone else is as the bait moves around people will chase it down.

We always do good near the markers just outside the pass, and all along the color change at the pass. We even catch bait in the pass a lot during the summer...

If your having trouble though, try the east side of the color change right outside the pass... Watch the bottom for small structure and fire away... If there's no big schools we usually can find something there.

Sabiki of course.

What are you getting there, menhaden? Where do you need to go to track down hard tails?

A week or so ago we were catching nothing buy small spanish mackeral... But during the summer, I'm not sure what the bait is called, might be a hard tail if that is descriptive of the fish... They have a hard back half and is a pretty sturdy fish, but we catch a TON of them. It's a hard tail or threadfin looking thing...

Cigar minnows are there a lot in the summer and what we cross our fingers for. There's another baitfish that we catch that is kind of shaped like a small cigar, but doesn't have the larger cigar like scales. They are ok, but cigar minnows seem to be bait of choice during the summer. When I google cigar minnow, images of both traditional cigar minnows and this "other" kind both come up...

Sorry for my ignorance on the names of these things, I just know what to put in the well when we catch it!

Bottom line is that there is almost always plenty of bait either in the pass or right outside the pass.
