I retired in May and have a Grady-White Advance 257 scheduled for delivery in a couple of weeks. My saltwater fishing experience is limited to a few years of Galveston-area bay fishing several years ago. I may still do some bay fishing, but my main interest is going offshore and I'm looking for a guide.
Right now, my focus is more on learning all about offshore fishing vs. just catching fish, although that would be a nice bonus.
If you consider yourself a good teaching guide, or know someone who is, I'd really like to hear from you.
Contact me via Email (Jtburf@swbell.net) we have a great local group of fisher people!! our boats range from 16' cats to 36' center consoles !!! we normally get together for lunchons (I gather the ranks so to speak) ...we are all very friendly and help each other when one needs it !!! your more than welcome to join us !!!
john is running a 22 and does most of his fishing offshore- on trailer
i am running a 27 and run offshore- in freeport
you will find freeport is closer to deep water.
email me or john (deleef@deleef.com is my email.)
i am doing some winter fishing so when the wind and water cooperate we will go with you or you can come with us. either way join us and welcome.
If you want to trailer that thing over to Pensacola or Destin I'll put gas in her and we'll go troll for tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and kings, and maybe bottom fish for grouper and snapper. Snapper season doesn't open until april though.
Twin 150's. I know all about the vaunted Yamaha reliability, but there's something comforting about having that second engine if one conks out when you're 60 miles from port. At my age, it would take the rest of my life to paddle that far.
I am always open to a litle gas splitting and boat cleaning. Let me know when you need an additional crew member. I am currently a MBA grad student at Rice, so time is limited, but that will change in May. Not to brag, but my buddies don't call me "Fishman" for nothing. Born and raised offshore fishing since I was two in S. LA and Venice, so I know my way around a gaff and boat as well as how to read radar and navigate. Also have a good arsenal of fishing tackle as I am now boatless. Don't have quite as much experience in the Galveston area however. Mostly fished out of Matagorda.
Sounds like you could teach me a thing or two. I'll keep you in mind after I get my boat in the water and checked out. I'm counting on that all happening before May. Study hard.
Senior, I would definitely go tomeof the lunches that jtburf sets up as there is a lot of knowlede there with a good group of guys.
Agulhas - I am in the full-time program. Thought about going to the EMBA program, but was really looking for a career change and thought the full-time would be best solution
you made a good decision. a buddy of mine did the exec mba and it seems that he is in the same job at the same salary at the same company that he was in before he went back to school.
and likewise i will let you know when we do some fishing.
I have met the MBA guy above at one of our luncheons, and was impressed, and IMO I think he might be good to learn things he mentioned above.
Actually, I hope to fish with him next year.
I fished out freeport the last two years, but sold my boat recently. I have anew sea vee on order, but delivery is not until August. I would love to help out. I am available for trips during the week. I strongly recomend Freeport instead of Galveston for your home base. Email - mrosenberg@gbltx.com
I have seen alot of your postings on this site for some time. Glad to see we have a few hard core offshore anglers here in Houston. I have a new Sea Vee boat on order for August delivery. She will live at Intercoastal Marine in Freeport. I would love to be included in your group. I have very flexible hours and am always available for weekday trips. Email at work is mrosenberg@gbltx.com. Let me know if you have room for another angler when planning the next meeting. I grew up fishing out of Miami, but business keeps me here now. look forward to hearing from you!
Keep me in mind if you are interested in fishing the PO'C or Port A areas, I've been fishing these areas for over 20 years. I have a 50-ton Masters license and know my way in and around the boat and waters out to 600 fathoms. I can supply most tackle up to 80 lb class as well as gaffs, lures, terminal, harnesses and portable chairs. I guide sight-fishing for tarpon, jacks and reds in the bay as well as catch and release king/ling trips nearshore in Texas State Waters.
Welcome to the wide world of offshore fishing where even catching bait is more fun than bay fishing- Curtiss.
Senior, Bp makes a good suggestion concerning hiring a local guide. Most would say that it is unneccesary, but it can really help you learn an area. But of course the guide, if he is guiding on your boat, knows the trip is a one shot deal and so they aren't going to teach you any secret wrecks or spots. And don't try to sneak a portable GPS on his boat to steal his coordinates, I've got a Charter buddy running a Venutre back home and it is amazing the number of people who try to do this. All I can say there people should never expect any help in the future. In my experience, rigging, effort, and fishing techniques are just as important as the area however. This is why only a few of the boats on the Lump out of Venice actually catch fish consistently.
Bp, thanks for the kind words. Would look forward to it any time. I'll tell you these new 3X engine boats are a learning experience in and of themselves. Been fishing my buddies new 34' Foutain with triples and it is work at those speeds in rough seas.
Agulhas, I hope you are right. The market is definitely looking up this year.
