That all depends on the salinity of the water and the ability to catch them. Size will always vary, but we usually have a supply here all year except when we have a lot of rainfall in a short time. The only dumb question is the one you did not ask.
seems like everytime its flat someones getting married or I'm hunting or its wednesday. can't catch a break maybe get to do some bay fishing this weekend doesn't look like the weather will allow anything else. I really want to try a boom vang trip but I'm going to need some extra fuel can't decide wether to buy a bladder or go the cheap route and get some barrels. Anyway have you been catching any fish?
Dlove,
I've seen a sticker on a guys truck around here that says "no potlicking" and has a pic of a shrimp with a red line through it. I had no idea what that meant. Acutally, I still don't know. What does that mean?
I did some searching for "potlicking" and I think I get it now. Potlickers apparently are folks that use bait instead of artificials. I've fished fairly frequently in the northern part of Galveston Bay since 1976, this is all news to me.
dlove, here's what I don't get. From the articles and other forum posts I read, I gathered that potlicking is considered retarded and uncool by some of the in-fishing clicks, yeah clicks like we're back in frickin' high school. I understand all that.
Here's the part I don't get: many of these too cool fisherman that were bashing guys who use bait, kept talking about the potlickers doing stupid things like getting too close to them and the area their fishing. I've seen plenty of times artificial throwers wade in right on top of someone, or motor up to spitting distance from someone who's on some fish.
I even read a couple of articles from guide captains that talked about fishing an area with artificials, and after a while if they didn't get anything, they switched to potlicking to get some fish.
If you didn't mean anything by it, then I apologize for taking offense.
Dlove ..yes Agulhas and I managed some nice snapper last sunday in state waters !! Saturday was dead flat and sunday was 3-4"
on 3 seconds!!! we left the dock at 8:30 and cleaning fish at 12:00!!!
it was that rough!!!
also get a bladder !!! safer and easier to store!!!!
My main reason I'm not a potlicker is my bay boat doesn't have a livewell although on occasion if the wife is fishing with me I will buy some shrimp. Offshore I'am most definitly a potlicker. I wasn't trying to insult anyone but growing up my grandfather always called bait fishermen potlickers, my other grandfather was strickly a bait fishermen so I did both but as I got older got more enjoyment out of pluggin.
I've almost always used some sort of organic bait when I've gone fishing. Now for the story...
I ran into a colleague one Saturday morning at the bank. He insisted that I check out the new up-scale sporting goods store in the same shopping center. I went over there with him and was actually pretty impressed with some of the stuff that they were offering. Custom rods, customs flies, etc. Equipment for making your own rods and lures. It was a nice place. Then I overheard my colleague talking with the manager of the store. They were denigrating people who use bait when they fish. I looked around the store some more and saw the nice collection of deer feeders, hunting stands, and high powered rifles. I think I was the only person there that morning who appreciated the irony.
