Default Coming to LA, need to borrow / buy a chip for C120

We are heading to Venice LA after Christmas to try the tuna fishing. I have a Raymarince C120 and really need to borrow or buy a:
NAVIONICS CF/15XG-2 GOLD XL9 USA - CENTRAL

chip for my unit. It looks like they cost just under $200. I doubt we will use it again since LA is almost 900miles from home. Trying to find a cheaper solution than spending that kind of money on a chip to use 5 times. Ideas??

Hire a captain to go on your boat at least one day to show you around.

Talking with Captain Eddie. Hopefully he can take us out the first day. Still would like a chip though.

Sounds like you plan to fish the lump. Why would you need a chip for that? It's 18 miles out the SW Pass. Just get the coords and punch 'em in. Might also try to get numbers for Lena, Mars and such just in case this lump season turns out like the last few years. Fishing here is a little different what with all the oil rigs and not sure how much good a chip will do you. I've never had a chip in my offshore boat. Just don't see the need for it.

Good luck.

I don't know where you could borrow one but you definitely need one due to the fog we have in the river and passes most days that time of year. otherwise a compass is all you need to find the lump. just run a 185 out of tiger pass about 35 miles and look for 100 boats almost touching each other just south of a large oil rig.

I am really more worried about navigating the river. I may just download or buy a paper chart and use the navigation software i have to kind of create my own chart by defining waypoints off the navigational buoys and bottom contours. Once I get out of the river I won't really be to concerned. For that matter how long of a run is it to the ocean?

if you are going to the lump or anywhere southwest or mars, medusa, etc. you don't want to get anywhere near the Ms river. if it's really foggy run red pass, not so foggy run tiger pass. it's 10 miles to the gulf either way and you'll usually be out of the fog once you hit the gulf. it's about 35 miles to the gulf if you go out southwest pass and you'll be dodging ships, crewboats, supply boats, their huge wakes, logs, and wing dams. the ships and boats you can see on radar, the other stuff you can't so well.
if you are going east or southeast run south pass or babtiste collette.
I have a c80 and can't overlay chart over radar so I split my screen radar and chart. if you are pulling that boat all the way down here and fishing/hunting 5 days 200$ is a drop in the bucket. just split it up between your fishermen. if they don't happily cough it up you need to find new fishing buddies.

Another suggestion. If fishing the lump, go out of Grand Isle. Not much further to tow and no river to deal with. The distance from GI to the lump is just about identical as from Venice Marina and it's all open GOM...no fog.

Thanks for the info guys. I need to get a chart so I can learn the locations you are speaking of. I spoke with BOE Jim today. He offered some options.

Luna Sea I got your message. I will be in touch!

Thanks!
